If he did indeed have the gun "pointed at a cop", his biggest mistake was not pulling the trigger first when the cop drew his gun. In this instance, he had every bit as much right as the cop to self defense. Last I checked, it wasn't against the law to answer your door while holding a gun. Don't care if it's "stupid." Don't care if it's not something a lot of people do. Only care if it's legal.
It's not his fault the cops screwed up.

Oh, stop with the conspiracy theories... next you'll be claiming that cops are breaking into the homes of 92 year old women unannounced, gunning them down in a flurry of bullets, and covering the whole thing up with planted drugs, falsified documents, and stories about how these seemingly sweet old ladies were really vicious cocaine dealers ...if his gun was pointed already, wonder why he didn't get a shot off?
at the least, the cops are incompetent.....
there is surely more to this story, but we probably won't hear it...
What Florida law makes it illegal to point a gun at people who are standing on your property?per the info we have
cops didn't screw up
he screwed up if he did come to the door with his gun drawn and pointing at people
I get it, but watch for the cover-up....Oh, stop with the conspiracy theories... next you'll be claiming that cops are breaking into the homes of 92 year old women unannounced, gunning them down in a flurry of bullets, and covering the whole thing up with planted drugs, falsified documents, and stories about how these seemingly sweet old ladies were really vicious cocaine dealers ...
Oh, wait...

Just kidding about the conspiracy part.

Technically, if he is living in an apartment building, right outside his door would not be his property necessarily. In fact, there are many apartment buildings that do not allow guns in them. Most of the ones I have lived in actually had this rule.
cops didn't screw up
My bad, I was trying to make sense of your claim that the homeowner in some way screwed up. I'm glad you agree that he did nothing illegal... I understand now - you're just making a poor argument.LMAO
What planet do you live on where I said its illegal to point a gun at people on your property?
They went to the wrong place without verifying it, and ended up shooting the wrong guy. I'd say they screwed up real ****ing bad.
As I understand it, he was standing inside his door, not right outside it.Technically, if he is living in an apartment building, right outside his door would not be his property necessarily. Given that he was a innocent citizen exhibiting legal behavior, it would have been perfectly reasonable for him to have shot the gun to save his life.
As I understand it, he was standing inside his door, not right outside it.
As far as the law goes, the apartment is his home. He is leasing it. Had he survived the encounter - and guns were indeed prohibited in the apartment - I suppose they could have evicted him for breach of contract, but a line in a lease agreement doesn't take away your right to self defense.
Sigh, I hate to hear stuff like this...such a shame....I dont know about anyone else...but right next to my door there is a combat shotgun...and a million vote stun gun...for god sake LOOK whos at your door before you open the damn thing...I always do...why would you just answer your door pointing a gun at whoever is standing there...what if it was a 10 yr old selling school candy....I have to believe if this guy looked and saw two cops at his door he wouldnt have done what he did
The cops were wrong with the information we have. The guy's motorcycle was parked in front of that door, so they assumed he lived there. Well, wrong. The mistake the guy made was opening the door. Yet, if he hadn't? The coppers might have kicked it in. Same result. He's got a gun. Somebody(ies) die.
It was an accident. But they were most certainly wrong. And an innocent man (from all accounts) is dead.
Florida. Sound familiar?
Why didn't they just stake out the motorcycle? Ask the property management company which apartment he lived in? Why make such a huge assumption at 1 AM?
I seriously doubt the coppers just knocked on the door. We'll never know. That blue line thingie and all.
Something has been nagging me about this and I couldnt put my finger on it, till just now....if this guy opened his door with a gun pointed at the cops....they had to unholster bring the gun up an shoot him...he had plenty of time to pull the trigger and at least shoot one cop...
Either this guy was just a dumbass and had no intention of ever pulling the trigger...or he saw they were cops and paused, but if he did all he had to do was OH WOW SORRY and aim the gun down and they would not have killed him.....or he knew there were cops at his door and this was suicide by cop...but something isnt right about this...
Them going to the wrong house was the entire cause of the shooting. It's entirely their fault.we arent debating whether they went to the right house LMAO
we are debating the shooting
opening a door with a loaded gun pointed straight?
that's asking to die.
If the police were on alert for the suspect, they probably already had their guns drawn when they knocked on the door. Then as they heard the door being opened, they would likely aim their own weapons at whoever was opening the door. If the guy was pointing his weapon at them, then they would likely fire before he was able to shoot one of them (since they suspected they very well may be facing the dangerous guy they were after). Now, if the guy was pointing his gun at the floor, then they likely would have told him to "drop your weapon".
It is possible that they shot the guy without provocation.
Honestly, unless more info comes out, I will give the cops the benefit of the doubt. I don't think more will come out, considering the circumstances of the incident though.
