FCC to consider banning broadcasters from saying 'Redskins'
October 1, 2014
The Federal Communications Commission has received a petition asking it to punish broadcasters that use the word "Redskins," which just happens to be the name of the NFL team in Washington, D.C. "We'll be looking at that petition, we will be dealing with that issue on the merits and we'll be responding accordingly," FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler told reporters. Well, that doesn't sound like that big of a deal. They'll look into it ... and then life will continue as always, with owner Dan Snyder not caring in the least if some Native Americans are offended by his team's name or not, right?
"There are a lot of names and descriptions that were used over time that are inappropriate today," Wheeler added. "And I think the name that is attributed to the Washington football club is one of those."
Hmmm. Well, on second thought, things might get a bit tricky for anyone assigned with covering or who feels like chatting on air about the D.C. football team. Pretty hard to talk about something if you can't refer to it by name. Who knows, maybe that might get Snyder's attention. The petition came from legal activist John Banzhaf III, who asked that local radio station WWXX-FM be stripped of its broadcasting license when it comes up for renewal because of its use of the name "Redskins." According to Banzhaf, use of the word is "akin to broadcasting obscenity." Reuters also says he described it as racist, derogatory, profane and hateful.

I've been hearing a lot about Guinea, the country, in the news regarding Ebola. I wonder how Italians feel about that.

What about helicopters? They tend to make an offensive whop, whop, whop sound.

What do you think about the word crackers?
It's OK, but I much prefer to be called trailer trash.
As a kid growing up south of Atlanta I had a goal of becoming an Atlanta Cracker. You see we used to have a AA baseball minor league team that played in Ponce De Leon Field known as the Atlanta Crackers. Then to top that off, the old negro league team in Atlanta was named the Atlanta Black Crackers.
It seems to me today all the emphasis is on making people feel good and not to offend them in any way with words. Very little emphasis on making their lives better and solving their problems. By solving their problems I don't mean just throwing money at the symptoms, I mean getting at the roots of the problems and and doing something about the causes.
That sounds wonderful until you realize that many of those root causes are the direct result of their own bad decisions. The only way to prevent folks from making bad decisions is to limit their freedom to do so.
What we have now are morons begetting more morons and the entire cycle is funded by the taxpayer. In order to convert yourself from simply being a poor person to a being a needy household you generally must add a dependent (or two or three) - which makes absolutely no sense at all.

Mad. But it will bolster my suit when I sue the producers, actors, directors and support staff of The Godfather.
Most probably a 1st amendment violation.
Not really, not when I prove that all the Italian gangster movies since that were born of that hurtful film came out furthered that horrible image.Maybe the 40 year gap between when the movie came out might hurt your case.
Not if they're using public airwaves. We provide them with a public spectrum, they agree to adhere to public standards.
I hadn't thought about this before. I have no problem with it. I'm interest to know how Dan Snyder feels about this because I doubt he saw this coming. It's an interesting way for people who have a problem with the team name to get it changed.Simpleχity;1063825346 said:There you have it.
