Mark Lloyd, newly appointed Chief Diversity Officer of the Federal Communications Commission, has called for making private broadcasting companies pay licensing fees equal to their total operating costs to allow public broadcasting outlets to spend the same on their operations as the private companies do.
Lloyd wrote Prologue to a Farce while a senior fellow at the liberal Center for American Progress. In that capacity, he co-authored the 2007 report The Structural Imbalance of Political Talk Radio, which concluded that 91% of talk radio programming is conservative and 9% is “progressive.”
The report argued that large corporate broadcasting networks had driven liberals off the radio, and that diversity of ownership would increase diversity of broadcasting voices.
This is something he promoted in his 2006 book. No word if that is what he will call for in his new role. I do not think it would be a good idea if he does call for it.
Agreed there is no proof he is calling for it at this time. However him wanting to charge fees of current radio broadcasters equal to operating costs is in action. Even if his motives are pure its a ridiculous idea.
That would never happen. The guy may want that sort of arrangment, but it doesn't pass the laugh test. Any attempt to actually implement it would be dead in the water
Then why is someone, who believes this is the right thing to do, a part of our government?
Especially a part of our government who doesn't answer to anyone.
Let me ask everyone that thinks this is no big deal. Would you stand still for a member of our government who proposed ethnic cleansing? Or, would you all just blow it off as you're doing now?
I have lived among some highly educated people much of my life, and it is clear to me that many of them are so focused on their specialties that what should be common knowledge and good judgement escapes them completely.
Just let it pass as long as all he does is propose it. If he pushes it, then we have a problem.
Funny; that's was the attitude in Germany back in 1933.
Nazi reference on page 2 of the thread! Not a record, but still pretty darn good. It's nice we have a few people who can always be counted on to make idiotic over the top comments that have nothing to do with the topic of discussion.
Just giving you an historic example. What's that old saying? You should know it. It was coined by one of the original Libbos.
There is a saying about comparing funding of public radio to nazi Germany?
You're smarter than that. C'mon.
PBS has outlived its usefulness. Everything it does, a commercial channel does at least as well, if not better. It should be ended.
NPR is different in that respect. But NPR does fine as-is.
This cockeyed proposal, of course, comes from the worst totalitarian impulses of liberalism.
Do you even watch PBS? After watching the complete degradation in quality in channels such as Discovery, TLC, History, A&E, among others we need PBS even more. Frontline has been some of the most insightful and informative television this past decade. Their special America at the Crossroads is incomparable anywhere else. Do you think that any of Ken Burn's excellent documentary series could be made anywhere else? What shows compare in quality to Nature or Nova?
Somehow this does not suprise me. Doesn't it seem Obamas new communications "Czar" wants to cripple conservative talk radio by imposing a unpayable fee to finance liberal radio.
