The FBI COINTELPRO (FBI acronym for Counter Intelligence Program) was a covert domestic program designed to attack certain political groups that the FBI found objectionable. This program targetted the anti-war movement, it was used to attack the Civil Rights Movement and also student movements. Under this program, the FBI attempted to blackmail Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The only reason why this program was discovered was because a citizens calling themselves "Citizen's Committee to Investigate the FBI" removed boxes of files from an FBI resident agency office in Media, Pennsylvania and released them to the press. Gradually, more files were obtained through the federal Freedom of Information Act, which had been temporarily strengthened at the time to help restore public confidence in government in the wake of Watergate and the exposure of official lies about the Vietnam War with the exposure of the Pentagon Papers. A few agents and informers began to disaffect from the FBI and talk about some of the things they did and found objectionable. Alot of COINTELPRO files have been destroyed, some still exist today but have remained hidden from public knowledge or view. Anothe interesting FBI file to read is Albert Einstien and the FBI's secret war against him and how they rumaged through his desk drawers, emptied his trash can and opened and read his mail. It is perhaps some of the biggest violations of government to read about.
