Seems hard to believe that a cop casually kneeling on someone can accomplish that unless the guy had a drug overdose and/or heart attack at the same time. No. I have seen a case where some died from asphyxiation of a person kneeling on a person's back though. It prevents the chest from expanding. Of course, the officer wasn't going to offer that as a defense.

More likely than anything, he was going to die no matter what. But they didn't react to get him help, and I think that moved the jury.

The Department of Justice reported on it in 1995, after it happened to several people. The report was used to train people not to do it.

Floyd was not violently resisting. He was refusing to turn and sit in the car. He claimed to be claustrophobic. He was in handcuffs already when Chauvin showed up. Chauvin threw him to the ground and knelt on Floyd until Floyd was past tense.

Two of the officers were kneeling on Floyd's back - one of which was Chauvin. Most of his weight would have been on the higher point. But obviously his attorney isn't going to argue that his weight on the back is more likely to be an issue than pinning his shoulder/neck.

It doesn't take as much weight as the study suggests, especially if the person is in a weakened state. Every case is different. The case encountered was one large man sitting on a large youth - with complicating factors. (He was not held at fault). I'm not saying that's what happened - just that it was far more likely to be an issue.
