...“China’s hackers are positioning on American infrastructure in preparation to wreak havoc and cause real-world harm to American citizens and communities, if or when China decides the time has come to strike,” [FBI Director Christopher] Wray told the House Select Committee on the Chinese Communist Party.

Though cyber officials have long sounded the alarm about China’s offensive cyber capabilities, Wray’s dramatic public warning underlines the huge level of concern at the top of the US government about the threat Chinese hackers pose to critical infrastructure nationwide. The head of the National Security Agency and other senior US officials also testified on Chinese cyber activity in front of the panel Wednesday....

The focus of the hearing was not US elections but how Chinese hackers are allegedly burrowing in computer networks at ports, energy plants and other key infrastructure in the US....

...the hackers are believed to be deeply entrenched in US infrastructure....

Part of the problem facing US officials is a sheer numbers game. Wray reiterated Wednesday that he believes that China’s cyber operatives outnumber all FBI agents by at least 50 to 1....

This is why you don't have things like nuclear stations with any outside internet connection.
If you give them any chance at all they're going to try and hack it and they have all the time in the world and a butload of very good hackers.

The UK has boosted spending on cyber security massively in the last decade as London is the largest banking hub in the world and as such an obvious target.

Looks as if you have been way ahead of us in anticipating and trying to guard against cyber attacks.

It helps that we had the code breakers of WW2 which is obviously a huge thing here and part of our national history.
It's a fantastic recruitment tool and they're a very respected profession.

GCHQ may be one of the most famous secret services on earth.
It also helps that any large increase in funding has to be announced by the government in the yearly budget announcement.

We're playing defense when we should be playing offense. Best thing to do is attack China's infrastructures and make sure our own infrastructures don't have the same weaknesses. That's probably what the Chinese are doing.

I originally posted this in a different thread, but it is apt here as well:

We can still take China in a shooting war. If nothing else, B-52 bombers flying out of Diego Garcia and western Australia can patrol the Indian Ocean and drop bombs on Chinese shipping. Cutting their trade with Africa will be the end of the Chinese economy.

Plus Barack Obama had us start building a new generation of offensive nukes. These new bombs have a low clean yield (only 50 kilotons), and they have advanced guidance systems that guarantee pinpoint accuracy. If we somehow fail to take China conventionally, we can just selectively nuke all their military bases and industrial zones without causing much in the way of collateral damage. We're also building a new generation of stealth bombers to deliver these new bombs.
