Well the young man in question that refused to stomp on Jesus was kicked out of the class so I would call that "duress."
Why was the FAU student suspended in the 'Jesus' case? | Inside Higher EdFlorida Atlantic University has maintained for a week now that no student was suspended for refusing to participate in an exercise in which students were told to write "Jesus" on a piece of paper and to stand on it. And for a week now, the lawyer for one student has been saying that the university suspended his client for objecting to the lesson. Florida's governor and numerous other politicians have also joined the discussion, denouncing the lesson that was used, and demanding to know why the student was suspended.
But the president of the faculty union at Florida Atlantic asserted in an interview with Inside Higher Ed Thursday that the university has neglected to explain that the student faced charges for making a threat against the instructor. Chris Robé, the head of the faculty union, said he has spoken to the instructor, Deandre Poole.
Robé -- who did not name the student -- said that Poole has been ordered by the university not to talk to any reporters, and is thus unable to defend himself, even as he has been widely criticized as anti-Christian (among other things). Poole is non-tenure-track, working on a one-year contract. Conservative activists are calling for him to be fired.
"He's been under a gag order, and the story has been framed all wrong," Robé said.
The reason the student faced charges, Robé said, was that "the instructor was verbally threatened," not because the student objected to the Jesus exercise. "He faced a hearing over that."
I'm not going off on a rant - you're the one ranting about how I'm some sort of evangelical....
You said this is a First Amendment issue and I call BS because I know the Constitution - it is really that simple.
in saying that, it is clear that you haven't done much reading on this ....

I think the issue is that you are going into the crazy knee jerking dance so common among some reactionary types ... regardless of race, creed or nationality ....
Yeah OK...
I know the story, know the US Constitution (like the back of my hand) and am a staunch libertarian... Ok
so if you know the story .... why are you saying he was under duress?
Do you know what the word "reactionary" means?
If it matters I just think it's funny you're trying to defend this alleged teacher (who isn't worthy of "professor.")
You have no basis of defense for such a turd.... All you have is your opinion.
Sounds like the kid was about to get kicked out and he used this jesus thing as an excuse. Stepping on the name jesus should never be a reason for expellation. Do the "litany of charges" have anything to do with the Jesus incident at all or is this a word-smithed story?
Stomp on "Jesus" or get booted is a fantastic example.
Really?
Would you ever step on the "Don't Tread On Me" flag libertarian?
I just read today the teacher was placed on administrative leave. Before the right starts cheering it seems they were place on it because of the massive amounts of threats to the teacher's safety and that it was a danger to students to have the teacher present in class and on campus. Them some good christians who got the lesson of jesus. if you don't like someone threaten to kill him. It is just like turning the other cheek and forgiving, only without the forgiving and turning the other cheek part.
Oh well, the student got what he wanted which was to threaten the life of someone because they asked him to step on a piece of paper with jesus' name on it. I would like to point out that even when jesus was clearly in danger and suffering through some of the worst abuse imaginable, according to the story, he never threatened the safety of his torturers or fought back as an example to his disciples. But I guess if they chose to have him step on a paper with his name on it then jesus would have gone all wrath of god on their roman asses. I guess it is a good thing they just beat the crap out of him and nailed him to a cross to die a slow horrible death instead of the paper thing.
no. I looked at the issue. I understood the point of the exercise.
the reaction of people like you has only proven the point of the exercise.
whether the word is "Jesus" or "mohammed" makes no real difference. the word "Jesus" was useful to prove that words are powerful in the context of a group of students at a US University ... something else, eg "mohammed" may have been more useful elsewhere.
if the lesson still escapes you, that only reflects how powerful - and dangerous - words can be.
Stomp on "Jesus" or get booted is a fantastic example.
Yeah the point of the exercise was to prove who has principals and who doesn't .... I do. I'm a Christian and a libertarian and stomping on my beliefs is disrespectful to my ideas and beliefs.
Jumping on "JESUS" is like jumping an idiot into the gang of secular progressivism...
Get tortured and nailed to a cross, forgive your enemies. Step ona piece of paper with jesus written on it and threaten to kill the guy as a community. That is a fantastic example.
so what you are saying is that the point of the exercise is above your head?
where does it say he got booted for not stomping on Jesus?
You mean that communist ****s attempt to make individuals forget their roots, religion or creed?
you do know what liberty is, right?
You figure the whole thing out... then understand why.
ok ... so you really do mean to say that the point of the exercise is above your head.
which conspiracy theory would I have to subscribe to in order to figure the whole thing out?
