Have you taken a look at our schools lately?

My son is about to graduate Washington State University...he told me yesterday that in his entire 4 years there he barely bothered to study outside of class, because it was not required in order to get the grades he wanted.

In HS 2 of my 3 kids often skipped class...again because so little is expected of them that this is not required in order to get the credential.

Now my kids are unusually bright and all were home schooled my me for some period of time early in their lives...

THey have been learning on their own time and on their own direction.

But the schools never asked for enough to make my kids sweat.

Not a one, not even the $26k/year cost to attend UNI.

I have a big problem with that.

Ya, I was at Michigan State 83-85...I noticed it at the time re the university, I was very disappointed in what was supposed to be a decent school. Harold Bloom of course always said that the University skid started with the capitulation of the administrators to student demands during the late 60's. Others claim that it started with the GI Bill, universities grew too fast to suck up all that government money after the WW2, the skid they say started with the decline of standards then.

I saw it among our recruits in the Army, in the late 70's our technical manuals took on the new look format which was basically a text step and a picture/drawing that showed the action to be taken, along with the lowering of intelligence scores (GT) for highly technical jobs. At the same time in the public schools a D became a passing grade, it was a failure in my day. In the business world (high tech is mine) I see recent college grads that do not really understand their field yet they have that diploma. Today we have even stopped teaching cursive writing, really, how do they sign their name, with an X? We learned that lowering the standard was far easier than doing the work of lifting people up to the standard. It is one thing I blame as a cause for the state of many of our Black Brothers and Sisters, when it became of politically convenient to act as if the situation was improving while all along it was getting worse, all of us lost. We kick the can down the road with the best of them, but the Future of this Nation is with our young and if we do not resolve the issue, and real soon, there will be no future. Simply as that.
