Fact check: Trump makes more false claims about Canada in advance of meeting with prime minister

Carney played it well. Flattering Trump as transformative and then saying "me too". Trump didn't get it. Trump talking of annexing Canada and Carney saying some things are never for sale and making that noncombative by comparing it to the WH or Buckingham Palace. I think Trump ended on a very defensive note......"we don't need your XYZ" . Trump kept talking about our friendship, he clearly isn't paying attention.

As a aside, Trump did some serious backpeddling on trade deals. Guess it isn't going as well as he says.

The only man in the room with an Oxford Economics PhD lectures Trump on US/Canada trade.

Carney also made the point that this is a bigger thing. It's about reimaging a totally new relationship.....the old one is over.

Trump mentioned that the relationship with Carney in the Oval Office wouldn't be like that "other guy", referring to Zelensky.
I thought he meant Trudeau

Interesting statistic.

Carney has talked a lot about improving trade between provinces by removing interprovincial barriers. That improvement would be in his words "orders of magnitude" more than we're losing in this trade war.

He's also talked about Canadians doing more travel within Canada as adding 1% to our GDP.

He also twice praised the USMA and suggested changes might not be needed.

What the hell is he doing?

From CBC: while Trump was saying "never say never" (referring to 51st state) Carney said "never" five times.

Carney is leaving the White House. A news conference is expected at the Canadian Embassy for 3:00.

Everything is late though so that might be delayed.

Carney is very disciplined with messaging so I don't expect any surprises.

Carney, laughing and speaking over Trump, says "never" five times.

Too much makeup and some serious puffy baggy eyes. Looks like he probably stayed up all night practicing that "why Canada should become the 51st state speech with false claims on how Canadian would benefit from lower taxes" but not one single word on how much health care will cost which will wipe out any potential tax saving or lower min wage along with some of some basic freedoms that Canada enjoys.

Demonstrating he doesn't know what he's doing. I can't imagine any serious person is going to think Trump is a real player here when he gets the most basic of facts regarding our trade status between the US and Canada laughably wrong. That was a "0 cred" moment if there ever was one. The person leading US trade policy decisions doesn't know the country whose leader he's talking to is our number one recipient of exports; how horribly embarrassing. Good on Carney for educating his clueless host politely.

He should have spent more time learning who we export our goods to.
:)

Carney struck the perfect tone imo for dealing with Trump. He was uncowed and firm, but not antagonistic.

He represented us well and was respectful of the Office of the President.

The blinding shine of tRump's intellect was on full display claiming he is artistic and he thinks the shape of America would be nicer without the straight line at the top  Bolding is mine.

Trump Abruptly Changes His Tune On Canada Being The 51st State

With Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney seated next to him, Trump fielded a question about his repeated assertion that Canada would make a good addition to the United States.
“I still believe that, but it takes two to tango,” Trump replied, in an uncharacteristic display of respect for Canadian sovereignty.
The U.S. president went on to say that he thought Canadians would benefit from becoming Americans, and that the shape of the United States would be nicer if the northern border weren’t a straight line.
“I’m a real estate developer at heart … I’m a very artistic person,” Trump said.

“I do believe it would be much better for Canada,” he went on, claiming there would be “tremendously lower taxes” and “free military” protections.
Carney jumped in to say “there are some places that are never for sale,” such as the White House or Buckingham Palace.
Of his country, Carney said, “It’s not for sale, won’t be for sale, ever.”
“The opportunity is in the partnership and what we can build together,” he said.

Exactly! Plus the continued lie that the US subsidizes Canada makes me want to scream, especially when I hear and see so many of my fellow Americans not only believing but repeating this utter BS!

This thread is where all the hosers go to vent.

Lol just to add a personal experience to my first sentence.

The company I retired from once had a Canadian President who was a strong leader and brilliant (Harvard & Rhodes Scholar).

But he was a bully who could be extremely harsh.

I connected with him well because I learned quickly - don't try to bullshit him, never show fear, never poke him.
