This article in the latest issue of Science is not in a format that I can cut & paste. The following is a brief summary from its abstract:

Airborne transmission by droplets & aerosols is important for the spread of viruses... Face masks are a well-established preventive measure, but their effectiveness...is still under debate.

Even if the mask only gives me slightly better odds of avoiding infection, I will take that edge & wear a mask. There is a very good reason why hospitals & physicians' offices require you to wear a mask. Fume all about your personal liberties being usurped but you will still have to wear a mask to get treated.

A recent visit to a doctor's office resulted in a 'half masker' sitting down immediately next to me. IOW, his mask only covered his mouth, leaving his nose exposed. I think the nurses give these non-compliant patients a pass rather than get involved in a confrontation.

Yes, just as a car's seatbelt doesn't guarantee it will save my life in the event of a crash, I'll still wear one. The Covidiots clearly need to understand what 'mitigation' means.

Exactly. Not wearing a mask while in close contact with strangers is just like not wearing your seatbelt while driving at high speed on a highway. Drivers don't usually survive being strained head first through a broken windshield at high speed. By either not getting vaccinated or driving without your seat belt, you are playing with the odds. And I feel that if something can go wrong, it will eventually.

We call that 'Murphy's Law'.

Also, it's important to understand that masks are a part of other mitigation steps to prevent transmission, and were never meant to be the sole tool. It's why the whole "MASKS DON'T WORK!1!!1!" nonsense really misses the mark. All of the mitigation measures were to help reduce the potential spread. In the example you provided, a seat belt won't save your life 100% of the time, but it improves your odds of surviving a crash. Add an air bag to the mix, your odds of survival improve even more. It's the same principle.

It was a different feeling to walk into a Big Box Loews store without wearing a mask. All the employees wore masks. Being vaccinated is not like becoming invisible to the virus but more & more I see masks becomig rarer.

Wore mask today to make bank deposit. There are some places like that where masks are still mandated.

The corollary to Murphy's Law: Murphy was an optimist.

The thing is, masks give people a false sense of security, causing people to falsely believe they can go out in droves, doing whatever they want, as long as they are wearing masks. They also believe any mask will do and most have no clue about proper mask procedures. But as long as you are following the rules you can’t get or spread the virus - that’s those Trump supporters.
Mask mandates led to cases surging exponentially due to these factors. Cases didn’t start dropping until we approached herd immunity due to both all of the previous cases and the vaccine rollout.
Now you can argue that without masks at all things would have been much worse but the fact is mask mandates led to surges in the virus because masks caused more people to be out thinking they were invincible when they were actually getting and spreading the virus by being out. And, science showed that social distancing indoors was fairly worthless because the virus circulates everywhere and yet people mistakenly thought they were safe by socially distancing indoors - the virus was only being spread by those Trump supporters.
And the stupidest thing I never understood was that you have to wear a mask to enter a restaurant while most everyone inside is not wearing a mask the whole time you are there. Then when you get up to leave you have to mask back up to walk out. Really? You’re immune or can’t spread the virus for an hour inside but you have to protect yourself and others while walking in and out? But, hey, you’re following the rules so you can’t possibly be getting or spreading the virus - it’s those Trump supporters.
