J. Michael Luttig, a conservative retired federal judge declared on Wednesday that “there is no Republican Party” and said former President Donald Trump is even more dangerous than he was in the aftermath of the 2020 election.

American democracy simply cannot function without two equally healthy and equally strong political parties. So today, in my view, there is no Republican Party to counter the Democratic Party in the country,” Luttig told CNN’s Poppy Harlow on “CNN This Morning.” “And for that reason, American democracy is in grave peril.”

Luttig, who holds bona fide conservative credentials with longstanding ties to the Supreme Court, has become increasingly outspoken in sharing his criticisms of the GOP, calling the party “spineless” in June over its continued support of Trump.

“A political party is a collection and assemblage of individuals who share a set of beliefs and principles and policy views about the United States of America. Today, there is no such shared set of beliefs and values and principles or even policy views as within the Republican Party for America,” he said on Wednesday.

What do you think?

I agree with him.

The Republican Party is simply a brand, and Trump now owns that brand.

This is my own opinion (of course), but when a single person has as much influence over a party as Trump does, it's really that person's party.

It's like when an environmentalist named Ralph Nader (sp?) started a political party called (I think ) the Green Party, it seems that everybody knew he was in control of everything about it. So, he was the party.

Well, right now it looks like Trump controls everything about the GOP--even to the point of telling the Speaker of the House what he can and can't do--so, by all means, it looks like it's his party.

(. . . and he'll cry if he wants to. :) )
.

Oh, it's still the "Republican party" but the platform has radically changed, as platforms do. Today's Democrats don't support the same things they did 30-40 years ago.

The Republican party, pre-2016, used to stand for limited government, law & order, fiscal conservatism, etc. Now it's just Trump worship, cruelty to minorities, and attempting to "own the libz". Add "war on woke" as the latest platform component and that pretty much sums up today's Republican party.

Footnote: Those are among the reasons I left the GOP.

I do too. I would add the damage Trump has done with his constant divisive rhetoric. He has legitimize the radical right, the extremists that used to be a fringe element in the GOP but have now become the mainstream. And Trump is still successful at keeping them very angry.
It's a very dangerous situation, made more so by the 'leadership' that is emerging from that alt.right element to take control of the party. Your cited article is right- as the moderating influence bails on the Republican Party it becomes less and less an effective political force. But still dangerous because of the anger of the lunatic fringe/mainstream.

Is it my imagination, or are you implying the relatively recent change in the Republic Party is not to your liking?

Well, let's see...Biden was only the 2nd Democrat I've voted for in my life. The first was when I was in my 20s and a friend of my brother ran for a local office. I had been pretty faithful Republican voter prior to that. Well, 2016 really, I didn't vote at all because I could not vote for any of the garbage candidates.

Ahhh... so it wasn't my imagination, and that is a shame since I have been endeavoring to increase the scope of my admittedly limited imagination ever since I gave up on becoming an Alpha.

I don't think most people know what the Republican party platform is these days. Seems like it's all about Trump.

As far as I know, there is no republican party platform post 2016. They just say and do whatever they like.

Seems that way.

It's kind of a one word deal......."TRUMP!".

The GOP used to stand for something. Now they will fall for anything. (Thanks Alexander Hamilton...maybe)
The GOP used to stand for the end of slavery. However, they haven't stood for anything good in the past 100 years.

I don't know why anyone would vote for these idiots before Trump or after Trump.

Party platforms are agreed upon and written down every four years at national conventions. Republicans haven't done this since 2016.

They can't because they have to live by whatever Trump says. That's how cults work.

I agree.

What is left of the GOP is splintered and most of the Independents like myself won't vote for Trump.
That is good to hear, though I also agree with him that it is healthy to have two strong parties.....hopefully the adults in the Republican party will regain control.
