Not according to my egghead financial advisors, who have way fancier degrees than you do. It's listening to people like them instead of people like you is the reason why I am successful and wealthy and you are not.
You telling me how to run my business?
Do you even own a business?
Most of my waiters make above minimum wage because of courteous servive, great food, and a good hustle rather than relying on Big Daddy Government.
When you go out to eat, do you tip? With one of the lowest median annual salaries, food service is among the occupations with the most job growth. But some say that businesses should pick up the tab, and pay their workers an adequate wage. This could require making dining more pricey.
Everything You Don't Know About Tipping - Wait But Why
your argument is that if the base salary was minimum wage, red beans and rice would cost twenty five dollars? that's a ridiculous assertion. McDonalds pays more than minimum wage, and there's not a single item on the menu that even approaches twenty five bucks. same thing with many other restaurants where tipping doesn't happen.
you shouldn't be allowed to pay them a base salary of less than minimum wage. that's why it's called minimum wage.
Doing so would cause them to make less money.
no, it wouldn't. it would cause the restaurant owner to pay minimum wage like everyone else and stop skimming the tips, though.
I made over 100 bucks per night, on average. Over 10 years ago. In SC. At a Ryan's family steak house. Not exactly fine dining. Just waiting tables.
Sure, some nights I made less. Hell, some days I only made 30 bucks, and that sucked. But I averaged 600 bucks per weeks. I was...19, 20, maybe?
Can someone explain how that was bad? How that is broken? How that is a worse problem, than, say completely stagnant wages for middle class workers, or how they are working more hours now in order to get by than they did 30 years ago?
Once it it is universally understood that servers already make minimum wage, or just above, no one would tip, or at best, tips would be much more rare. Kinda like it is at quick serve establishments...they wait staff, they just don't take orders like full service places...and they make minimum wage or just above, and it sucks.
Again, explain why the servers themselves would WANT this to happen? They'll make less money. Plain and simple.
i disagree. tipping won't stop just because restaurant owners are held to the same wage standards as everyone else.
false. the price of the burger will go up by a buck or so, and people will still tip their servers for good service.
I don't know, man. I think you and I are at an impasse. No one tips the dude that pumps the gas for you anymore, at full service gas stations. Very few people tip barbers at walk in places anymore.
What?
Nobody tips their barber?
I'm doing it wrong.
And outside of NJ, I haven't seen a full service gas station in decades.

No one tips their servers at full service quick serve establishments anymore. No one tips the fella that carries your groceries to your car anymore.
Generally speaking, it's common knowledge that these people don't RELY on tips as a part of their income, like servers at restaurants do. Change that, and everyone knows the change, and I'll bet my bottom dollar that that gravy train will end.
Philosophically, I agree, the restaurant should be held to the same rules as everyone else. But in this little place I like to call reality...servers make darn good money. Low end, we're talking 40k per year. High end, twice that. Because 20% of three to four 80$ meals for an hour and a half of time is a good deal more than what minimum wage is gonna get ya, for that same time.
Ok.
And the rest of my post?
Wait, so women tip an "average" amount and men tip an "above average" amount? How does the average of "average" and "above average" equal "average"?
