Europe Feels the Strain of Protecting Workers and Plants

“In the U.S., you get money to close down factories,” said Mr. Franz, referring to the tens of thousands of Chrysler and G.M. workers who will lose their jobs as part of the White House’s plan to restructure the American auto industry. “In Europe, you get money to keep them open and safeguard jobs.”
This is why government intervention in an economy is a bad idea. No matter how well meaning government is, all the social safety net accomplishes is kicking the can down the road. Sooner or later economic disequilibriums must be addressed; generally they are easier if dealt with sooner.

Like I said in another thread. If these idiots were in power in the early 1900's we'd all still be riding horse and buggies, because we'd have to safeguard that industry so nobody would lose their jobs. Part of a progressive economy is not only job creation, but job destruction.
