There were not even a single inspection station on the US Mexico border until 1891 and the Immigration Act if 1917 implemented a literacy test and entry tax however they did not follow this law until after WW1.
We didn’t have a Border Patrol until 1924. So for only 101 years of our history did we have Border Patrol. In 1924 Congress authorized 450 BP officers be hired to patrol both the Southern and Northern border
