Electric dream: Britain to ban new petrol and hybrid cars from 2035 - Reuters

LONDON (Reuters) - Britain will ban the sale of new petrol, diesel and hybrid cars from 2035, five years earlier than planned, in an attempt to reduce air pollution that could herald the end of over a century of reliance on the internal combustion engine.

The step amounts to a victory for electric cars that if copied globally could hit the wealth of oil producers, as well as transform the car industry and one of the icons of 20th Century capitalism: the automobile itself.

The oil magnates will never stand for this.

The earliest autos were battery-powered electric cars but they were rapidly eclipsed by Rockefeller & the oil barons.

Electric cars are not feasible at this point for long distance commutes or for over the road travel. We are not going to get off of fossil fuels so just suck it up and turn your lights out and light up a candle.

Battery technology is rapidly advancing & will continue to do so. Rare-earth magnet motors would make autos much more efficient too. Such motors are what make your car's power windows work. Before they were developed you had to manually crank them.

Scientists in the 19th century proclaimed that controlled heavier-than-air flight was impossible. I forget their names...

Leaders of today dont get to decide the rules that the leaders of tomorrow will follow, nor what the people of tomorrow decide to do.

The is SMOKE AND MIRRORS.

There was a reason for that: early electric cars were slow like turtles and had enough charge for less than a mile. The market decided against them.

Today's EVs are still inferior to ICE vehicles- but if the Brits are stupid enough to shoot their own foot, then so be it.

Well, to be fair, Britain is not all that big. Driving coast to coast takes what? A few hours? It's only about the size of Iowa and Minnesota combined. A bit smaller.

Hadrian's wall was only about 75 miles long. Regardless of the power source, it would have stopped any Mini. So, there's that...

Do you think the Romans were chanting "Build That Wall" during Hadrian's reign?

Along with the electric. They were both eclipsed by the infernal combustion engine & the gasoline that Rockefeller had been dumping as a byproduct of making kersosene from petroleum.

Thomas Edison was one of the premier inventors of heavy duty batteries for vehicles. See Edison Storage Battery Company - Wikipedia

Yes, steam and electric cars were eclipsed by gasoline cars....largely due to Ford's mass production innovations which made the gas powered cars more affordable to the masses. Ford also lobbied to have paved roads for his cars to drive on, too.

Interestingly enough, Thomas Edison invented the first alkaline battery...for electric cars. So I'm guessing the battery didn't store enough power for long distances since that was one of the cons about electric cars and another reason gas powered cars became more popular.

Few people do long distance commutes in the UK... In fact it is a very American thing. Electric cars would be more than enough for a huge majority of people.

The oil industry isn’t insignificant but it no longer has the power to block this change. It is going to happen whether they want it or not.

I fear the main problem with this policy is that there isn’t going to be anything like enough support or investment to cover the range of related impacts and consequences. They talk about funding more charging points but that won’t be anything close to enough to account for the rapid increase in electric vehicles on the roads, especially outside the large towns and cities the investment will inevitably be focused in.

I’ve not seen anything about accounting for the significant increase in demand on the electricity network either. I’m less concerned about the environmental issues of generation – that can and will improve over time – the demand will be immediate, especially with the reduced target date.

Another overlooked aspect is the network of fuel supply. As the number of ICE vehicles drops, petrol stations will stop being economically viable and will shut down. That risks disenfranchising the minority still driving ICE vehicles which will lean towards the poorer and more vulnerable. That risks he same kind of issue there is with Post Offices, Cash Machines and high-street banks.
