Electability of Trump or Cruz

Im about as conservative as they come. I have some libertarian positions but mostly am lock step line with the most far right republicans.

I see Trump leading this race and have to ask myself, is he electable? Will enough people vote for him in the general election where republicans are already disadvantaged by the electoral system. Democrats start the day like 70 votes ahead by default.

Same with cruz, who i think i am most in line with ideologically.

Rubio is the only candidate beating hillary in polls. He is inexperienced and it bothers me he has never held a real job outside of politics. It also bothers me he is the biggest hawk on stage never spending a day in uniform.

However, for the greater good i would cast my vote for him because he is electable.
 
I think your assessment is pretty good. I don't think Trump or Cruz stand a chance against Hillary OR Sanders. Rubio stands a solid chance against either of them. The polls currently have Rubio beating Clinton by 4 points and beating Sanders by 1 point.
 

I see any one of the three likely to get the US involved in yet another ground war in the Middle East. If the voters see what is happening, they'll vote against any of them.

How Trump appeals to anyone with a conservative bent is a mystery to me, but it appears that the Republicans, and some of the Democrats, are ready to vote for a demagogue simply because he's seen as an outsider untainted by special interests.

Your concerns about Rubio are well grounded. I thought he might be a good candidate, but that was before the debates.
 
Trump would have appeal to both sides and Independents. Cruz would not as he appeals to the far right only. If Trump wins the nomination you will see him stray off course regarding the Republican platform and he won't give a sh!t what the establishment thinks because he will already be the nominee. What could they do?
 

I agree. I still think Trump is the Republican parties worst nightmare. If he gets the nod, the Republicans that were attracted to his independent, answer to know-one mantra will get to see the other side. Trump will tact left and probably farther left than any Republican has since .... well, I can't think of a good example.
 
I've posted this on other threads so I guess I'll post it here, as well. The only popularity rating Trump has to worry about beating is that of congress (about 15%) and President Obama (about 35%).
 
So you're saying the GOP won't like Trump because they can't control Trump?

Aren't some of you guys upset with the very same GOP and its congresspersons that have promised big things yet failed to deliver? You trust the GOP more than Trump?

I have no idea what you are getting at. I am thrilled that the GOP can't shoot straight. I just wish they wouldn't gum up progress with their petty antics.

I think its highly unlikely that Trump gets elected, but it appears there is an excellent probability he will get the nomination (therein an excellent example of the GOP not being able to shoot straight). In the unlikely event he actually wins the White House, though, I am expecting much more of a centrist than we have seen for our pachyderm friends in a generation.

I think I can actually live with Trump. Can you?

neither of them will be or next president. Its just how america is right now. On actual election day they never get the votes needed.
 

As an outside, neither Repub or Dem, my take is that:
Trump is Not Electable, far too many Conservatives and Liberals see him for what he actually is.
Cruz while hated by many Conservatives and nearly all Liberals does stand a chance of betting Hillary and would win in a landslide against Bernie.
Rubio, the darling of the GOP Leadership is nice enough and probable the least radical of all the candidates simply comes off as too young and inexperienced, even though neither is accurate and unfortunately while he may lead Hillary in current polls would probably get killed in any debates with either Dem candidate, perception is everything.
Personally I, like many, find the choices pretty sad if this is the best this Nation can do. depending on who the final two are I have the feeling we are going to have a very low voter turnout election year.

Kasich is one of the better ones but he is only running a test run from what I can tell.

Trump has broad voter appeal. He has great appeal with independents. He has great appeal with non-traditional GOPs like Rand Paul types. He has great appeal with those who see a downgrade of America from all the spending from military and social programs. He has great appeal from those who want manufacturing jobs. He has broad support from those who want the US to get back to interpreting The Constitution literally, and stop interpreting The Constitution via the ideology of a quorum of 9 judges (oh, how many) of SCOTUS and make that be the final say in any matter concerning the US.

About the only group in the GOP he has consistently alienated are large C, Conservatives. GOP members who believe in a hawk America that also tries to convert the rest of the world into a democratic, christian way of life.

His support doesn't come from that part of America that wants the US to spend even more for outrageously expensive programs, or for causing revolution because of a desire to rip up The Constitution.

I dont see any evidence of that in real life or even here at DP. Trump nor Cruz will be our next president and ill take friendly DP style bets on that with anybody.

Then go to a Trump rally. It's obvious you haven't. I've seen and talked to all those types of people waiting in line to hear Trump stump.

I don't know if he'll win the presidency or even if he'll win the GOP nomination but I do know Trump has very broad support. Competitors should be wary of this.

I can go to a KKK rally, Christina Aguilera concert, or any other presidential canidate and meet all those types and or many more also, that doesnt mean theres "broad support" for them.
2.) again I see no evidence of "very broad support" in real life or even here at DP.
 
OK, now I get it. You aren't saying Trump doesn't have broad support. You're saying YOU don't give Trump support (and then you think your support is mainstream).

Nope, my personal support is meaningless, my opinion or your opinion of main stream support is also meaningless.

I'm flat out saying I see no real life evidence of "very broad support" in real life or here at DP and your personal experience at Trump rallies don't provide any. So I was curious what, if any support you had for your claim and you don't have any.
 
Mitt Romney was more liberal than OBAMA.

That's just ridiculous. Mitt Romney was more liberal than Ted Cruz, not Obama. You can't seriously believe that Romney was more liberal than Obama. That's just what Libertarians and Tea Partiers say about conservatives that aren't as far right as they are, like McConnell and Boehner being in Obama's back pocket and aren't conservatives. Hogwash.
 
Unfortunately, the surviving band of Republican Presidential candidates leave a great deal to be desired. And, because the candidates have neglected to explain and clarify the issues, Conservative voters have very little substance from the candidates to go on. All they know for certain is that Trump wants to build a new wall along the border with Mexico...and have them pay for it; Cruz wants to carpet bomb ISIS and get "Obamacare" repealed; and Rubio wants to balance the federal budget and give more money to the Pentagon. Both Trump and Cruz question the validity behind the Science of Climate Change. And, Rubio refuses to do anything about it, until the rest of the world agrees to follow his lead. But, all three Republican candidates agree on one thing....they want to eliminate every piece of legislation signed by President Obama. This year's Republican candidates are ill prepared to lead the country. None of them have served in the Military. All of them schmooze and cater to whatever group they are speaking to at the time. They cover their audiences with manure and keep them in the dark about their true motives. And, they regularly initiate a barrage of slanderous attacks on their competitors. If nothing else, all three Republican candidates have become experts in the field of Mudslinging.

Referring to the bold piece above, that is what Rubio says he wants to do. However, Rubio proposes completely eliminating taxes on investment income, that would mean, for example, that the top 400 tax payers would end up owing no federal taxes -- and since half the capital gains earned in the nation go to people in the top 0.1%, that's a huge decrease in taxes for the wealthiest Americans. Mr. Rubio is also calling for a balanced-budget amendment at the same time he's calling for tax-cuts, that means slashing the federal budget by about a trillion dollars a year -- which would certainly bring on a severe recession or depression. So, what we have is contradictory policy that's completely unworkable in the real world.
 

That's how you gain political points. Promise to cut taxes, increase spending, and balance the budget.
