I am very happy to read the news that Egypt are considering transferring/extraditing Australian journalist Peter Greste back home to Australia. A new law has been decreed in Egypt that allows non-Egyptian defendants/prisoners to be transferred to their own nation to be tried or serve their sentences. I think this new Egyptian law is inspired thinking. The global community needs better global governance and this new Egyptian law that facilitates global cooperation and contributes to global harmony will encourage the type of cultural humility that the global community needs to form a system of global governance that is based on friendship and goodwill. The imperialist US idea of wanting to extradite defendants from other nations to be tried in the US is arrogant and offensive. The US damages their own image by trying to extradite people to the US like New Zealands Kim.com. This Egyptian idea of allowing the defendant to face trial and serve their sentence in their own nation is in the right spirit and has the right vibe that the global community needs going forward in relation to global governance.
I have followed the Peter Greste case with great interest because he is a fellow Australian. Greste works for Al Jazeera and he was arrested in Egypt for meeting with Muslim Brotherhood members after the Muslim Brotherhood had been banned in Egypt and declared to be a terrorist group. Greste was charged with spreading false news and giving support to the Muslim Brotherhood and sentenced to seven years in prison. I fully agree with Egypt that foreign journalists need to respect the laws of the nations that they are reporting in but as an Aussie I would definitely prefer to see Greste serve his sentence here in Australia. Greste is guilty of ignorance more than anything and his employer Al Jazeera has acted irresponsibly to put him in such danger. Al Jazeera have hopefully learned to have more respect for each nations domestic laws in the future and that western backing does not give their employees any form of immunity.
I think Egypt have made their point to be honest and seeing as Greste has already served almost one year in an Egyptian prison and considering how appreciative all Australians will be if a pardon is offered to Greste, I think that there could be nothing better for Egyptian-Australian relations if Egypt does decide to allow Peter Greste to come home.
These types of things can cause great diplomatic tension and it is great to see Egypt stepping up with solutions. The Sisi government showed regional leadership during the recent Israel-Palestine war and this new Egyptian law is in my opinion Egypt stepping up to contribute to global leadership. I think it is clear that Sisi has proved the doubters wrong.
A Greste pardon would be a great act of goodwill that will strenghten the Egyptian-Australian relationship more than anything else could at this point in time. I hope that the Sisi government does indeed allow Peter Greste to come home. We will appreciate it.
