WOODSTOCK, Virginia, May 10 (Reuters) - The education board for Shenandoah County, Virginia, voted early on Friday to restore Confederate generals' names to two public schools in the predominantly white, rural and solidly Republican district, becoming the first in the U.S. to take such an action.

Under the board's action, Mountain View High School will be renamed Stonewall Jackson High, while Honey Run Elementary School will revert to the name Ashby Lee Elementary. However, any funds required to implement the changes must come exclusively from private sources, rather than public revenue.

What must Black people in Shenandoah County think?

Our pseudo-conservatives are putting racism front and center and think they're going to get the Black vote. Lotsa luck with that.

If renaming the schools is what the local citizens want I support their decision.

If they wanted to name the schools after Malcolm X and Louis Farrakhan, would you support that?

Do you think either of them would be worse than someone who helped lead a rebellion against the United States that led to the deaths of hundreds of thousands of Americans?

Well, it only matters what 3/5th's of their thoughts are.

"in the predominantly white, rural, and solidly Republican district" - It seems clear they don't care about the black vote. Nor do they even care what black people might think about this. They care about the vote of those who 1. Also don't care what black people think and 2. Believe it's necessary and proper to glorify owning slaves in the name of "preserving history and celebrating southern heritage". Sadly, I live in Prince William county, so I won't get the chance to tell them where to stick it this Nov. Given that Shenandoah county is only about a 10-minute drive from the WV border, I'm guessing their jobs are probably safe.

I grew up in Virginia and the older I have gotten the more odd I have found it that there is a sizable contingent there that wants to glorify a warmongering oligarchical nightmare slave state where I have had underwear that lasted longer than it did.

If you say so so.

I do.

Are you black? If not, how the hell do you presume to speak for black citizens of that district?

No I'm not, but it's not difficult to figure out. Are you actually suggesting that black people in Shenandoah county might approve of the Lost Cause and glorifying the Confederacy? Lol wow...

All white people should also have a problem with it if they support the United States.

ANYONE who supports putting Jefferson Davis's name on a school should be ashamed of themselves, and mocked by everyone else.

There is no room for debate on it.

I notice that every white liberal thinks he's Atticus Finch, standing up for poor helpless, childlike blacks. White savior syndrome.

The type of person who supports naming a school after Jefferson Davis isn't going to care what a black person has to say, so white people should be telling them how stupid they are.

News flash, this isn't 1860 or even 1930. Blacks are not helpless pathetic victims, they're fully functioning American citizens who think and speak for themselves. They don't all fit in that little box liberals think they belong in.

Yea, not sure what in my post makes you feel obligated to point that out.

There is MLK Blvd in every downtown from CA to NC

This line wasn't clever the first time you used it.

Is slavery an unequivocal evil? Unless you want to argue it isn't, then the Confederacy was evil for seeking to perpetuate it. There is no justifying the veneration of the Confederacy or its leadership.
