Dutch ban religious animal slaughter without stunning

Do you have any pets?

Irrelevant. Everyone should have the right to practice their religion as dictated by their conscience subject only to the human rights of others.

Anyone who would interfere with this or any other fundamental human right is a fiend of the first order.

Judaism clearly allow polygamy, and killing children who curse their parents.

is it anti-Semitic to make such activities illegal in the USA?

killing children who curse their parents.

You are making a straw man. You are deliberately ignoring the part where I said, "subject only to the human rights of others."

As for polygamy, there's nothing wrong with that. You need to stop letting your personal bigotry dictate your political beliefs, Thunder. It's not a good look.

lol.
and yet, the evil and authoritarian USA, has made polygamy illegal.

when will the Mormons, Muslims, and Jews rise up and declare their religious rights????

;)

oh, and btw, defending polygamy and the sacrificing of live-animals, is a bad look.

Do you think there should be animal cruelty laws?

It's not always popular to do the right thing. Defending human rights is always the right thing. Defending animals at the expense of human beings is never the right thing.

the ability to torture and kill an innocent, live, conscious animal..is NOT a human right.

its sadism.

Anyone who would interfere with this or any other fundamental human right is a fiend of the first order.

tribes and cultures, who torture and kill innocent, live, and conscious animals for religous reasons, are sadistic and evil.

such practises should be made illegal and the practicers put in prison.

there are only three reasons why a human should have the right to kill an animal:

1. for food.

2. for necessary medical research.

3. to relieve the animal of suffering.

..anything else, is a disgusting crime.

Not to protect their livestock?

Like I said, it's within your rights to kill a cattle thief, but it's still a terrible sin. Human life is just so much more precious, a human criminal is more valuable than an animal, even an animal that you own.

yes, that's fine. and to protect yourself or your children.

but to kill an animal purely for religious ritual, especially when it is is awake and conscious, is disgusting, sadistic, and thankfully illegal in the USA.

I was replying to Thunder's list of acceptable reasons to kill an animal.

Oh, that list was woefully incomplete. It's easier to make a list of when it is morally acceptable to not kill an animal:

1. Whenever failure to kill the animal will have no appreciable effect on the welfare of any human beings, then it is morally permissible to allow the animal to live.

Of course you are wrong yet again. But thankfully, SCOTUS unanimously disagree with you.

The Supreme Court ruled today that a Florida city's ban on ritual animal sacrifice violated the religious freedom of the followers of an Afro-Cuban religion in which the sacrifice of animals plays a central role.

All nine Justices agreed that the prohibition, enacted in 1987 by the City of Hialeah, violated the First Amendment's guarantee of the free exercise of religion. "The principle that government may not enact laws that suppress religious belief or practice is so well understood that few violations are recorded in our opinions," Justice Anthony M. Kennedy wrote for the Court.

Thunder, your bigotry against religious views you disagree with has been duly noted. As has your persistent ignorance of things legal.

SCOTUS found against the City, not because they believe that all religious animal sacrifice is protected under the 1st Amendment, but because the law seemed to specifically target the Santaria religion.

However, if the law simply made illegal the killing or injury of animals for any reasons other than for consumption or medical science, the law would have most likely been held up.

The Supreme Court, however, held that the ordinances were neither neutral nor generally applicable: rather, they applied exclusively to the church. Because the law was targeted at Santería, the Court held, it was not subject to an undemanding rational basis test.

....clearly, this case does NOT confirm your understanding of American law. try again.

Murdering innocent animals for reasons other than medical science, consumption, self-defense, or to relieve the animal's suffering, is immoral and evil.

One day, all animal sacrifice will be illegal in the USA.

oh, and by the way, almost every states bans harming an animal for reasons other than medical science or consumption.

so animal sacrifice IS illegal in most if not all of the USA.

oh look, injuring & killing of animals for ANY reason other than food consumption or medical research/science, is 100% illegal in the State of New York, with NO religious exemptions:

§ 353-a. Aggravated cruelty to animals

1. A person is guilty of aggravated cruelty to animals when, with no justifiable purpose, he or she intentionally kills or intentionally causes serious physical injury to a companion animal with aggravated cruelty. For purposes of this section, "aggravated cruelty" shall mean conduct which: (i) is intended to cause extreme physical pain; or (ii) is done or carried out in an especially depraved or sadistic manner.

2. Nothing contained in this section shall be construed to prohibit or interfere in any way with anyone lawfully engaged in hunting, trapping, or fishing, as provided in article eleven of the environmental conservation law, the dispatch of rabid or diseased animals, as provided in article twenty-one of the public health law, or the dispatch of animals posing a threat to human safety or other animals, where such action is otherwise legally authorized, or any properly conducted scientific tests, experiments, or investigations involving the use of living animals, performed or conducted in laboratories or institutions approved for such purposes by the commissioner of health pursuant to section three hundred fifty-three of this article.

3. Aggravated cruelty to animals is a felony. A defendant convicted of this offense shall be sentenced pursuant to paragraph (b) of subdivision one of section 55.10 of the penal law provided, however, that any term of imprisonment imposed for violation of this section shall be a definite sentence, which may not exceed two years.

I have little doubt that every other state in the USA has a similar law.

..oh look, California also makes it a crime to kill or abuse animals, and mentions no religious exemptions:

CAL. PENAL CODE § 597 (2010). Cruelty to animals.
(a) Except as provided in subdivision (c) of this section or Section 599c, every person who
maliciously and intentionally maims, mutilates, tortures, or wounds a living animal, or
maliciously and intentionally kills an animal, is guilty of an offense punishable by imprisonment
in the state prison, or by a fine of not more than twenty thousand dollars ($20,000), or by both
the fine and imprisonment, or, alternatively, by imprisonment in a county jail for not more than
one year, or by a fine of not more than twenty thousand dollars ($20,000), or by both the fine and
imprisonment.

...oh, and did I mention its a Federal offense to harrass, mame, or kill an animal protected by the Endangered Species Act?

It's nice to see you are at least attempting to do research. You're not very good at it, but at least it's an attempt. Who knows, maybe one day you will cure yourself of your ignorance altogether, and ditch this absurd animal-rights-radicalism.

So you started out arguing that animal sacrifice is illegal in the USA -- it is not -- and now you have watered down your argument to say that it is illegal in New York since that state hasn't got a religious exemption to animal cruelty laws. Moreover, it is unclear whether such a law would stand up to constitutional scrutiny.

In the light of facts, your argument has withered away to nothing.

why are you soo uncivil? are you unable to debate an issue without being rude?

and btw the way, animal cruelty is illegal in NY, CA...and probably every other state in the Union.

do you have any examples of states that allow physical harm or death of an animal for reasons OTHER than medical research and/or food consumption?

I bet you got none.

You ever heard of hunting or pest-control?

As I suspected, none of the states that have felony animal cruelty laws, make religions exemptions.

If you kill an animal because you are a sadist, you go to jail.

If you kill an animal because you wish to sacrifice it to a God, you go to jail.

God bless America.
