The star New Orleans Saints quarterback gave a lengthy response to ESPN when asked about the perceived conflict between those two stances -- including the potential divide in his own locker room, where players like Malcolm Jenkins and Demario Davis are among the leaders of the players' coalition seeking social justice and racial equality.
"I love and respect my teammates and I stand right there with them in regards to fighting for racial equality and justice," Brees said. "I also stand with my grandfathers who risked their lives for this country and countless other military men and women who do it on a daily basis."
Brees' comment immediately drew criticism on social media, including from Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, who said kneeling during the national anthem has "nothing to do with the disrespect of [the United States flag] and our soldiers."
Saints' Drew Brees says he'll 'never agree with anybody disrespecting the flag'
What is the big deal about standing for the flag? It seems a lot of people in this country are brainwashed and acting like they are in a cult. Blind Patriotism.
There is nothing wrong with taking a knee...
There is nothing wrong with taking a knee during the National Anthem...
There is nothing wrong with taking a knee during the National Anthem and stating it is to protest police abuse and violence...
There is a problem with taking a knee during the National Anthem and then stating the reason you are doing so is to convey that you do not respect the flag, Anthem or the nation and where you also accuse pretty much all white people of being racist.
If people want to disrespect the flag, let them. This is a free country, right?
Sure... and the fans also have the right to protest going to or watching the games and hurting the team in the pocket book.
The team/league then makes a decision. Kap has no right to be in the NFL or on a team. He made a bad decision.

He made a bad decision so he has no right to ever play again? Yeah thats kind of stupid bro.
Teams lied about it though. Would you agree? Teams claimed they didn't sign Kap for football reasons and it had nothing to do with him kneeling? Do you really believe that?

Back to Brees. It would only be fair for the Saints to cut Brees and he be blackballed from the NFL and Hall of Fame. His comments were way more ignorant than Kaps.
The city is turning on him quickly. His career might be over.
Buffalo Bills rookie quarterback Jake Fromm apologized Thursday after screenshots emerged of a text conversation in which he claimed only "elite white people" should be able to purchase guns.
The conversation, which took place in 2019 and was posted to Twitter early Thursday morning, involved Fromm and a friend discussing guns. Fromm wrote, "But no guns are good. They need to let me get suppressors" before adding, "Just make them very expensive so only elite white people can get them."

Get rid of these guys. Fromm, Brees, Big Ben. Kick them out of the league.
If you disagree that taking a knee during the anthem is disrespectful, that's racist?
It is not racist to say only elite white people should own guns?
Really don't get why Brees thought it was a good time to make that statement....

Brainfart?
Just let me tap on that hornet's nest to see if there are any hornets in it.

He didn't say anything wrong... what he is guilty of is not saying exactly what all the protesters want to hear.
Do you mean if you agree that taking a knee is disrespectful... that is racist?
I see that you left out the "ha ha" indicating that he was making a joke...
Because he thought that he was allowed to express his opinion on the matter... Free Speech and all that...
Brees didn't say that. His "crime" was saying he would never "disrespect" the American flag by refusing to stand for the national anthem. The flag is a symbol of unity, or, at least, it's supposed to be. Apparently, standing for it is "hurtful" to some people and that makes Brees "part of the problem." He made it a bigger problem by apologizing for his comments. He didn't say anything wrong, except to those who wish to divide us.
