Dow UP over 1300 point pretrade and now opens just as big.

Manufacturing isn't going to return to the US on whole, though. That ship sailed long ago. When we made the US Dollar the default global trade currency, manufacturing left America. It's not coming back, not to what it was.
Now if we can only convince trump and his supporters of this.

They do but dividends on average (in terms of index funds) are less volatile than the market at large, which can help with sequence of return risk. Having said that, I prefer sp500 / total market funds over dividend funds.

I prefer the sp500/total market as well but having a large portion of our investment portfolio in income gives us a predictable yearly income stream we can count on without selling stocks. For anyone just starting out and younger I'd be going at least 50% growth.

We try to balance this out with etfs like SCHG.

trump himself said the tariffs were intended to bring manufacturing back to our shores, you are saying the tariffs will be discontinued if the other countries lower their tariffs.
Why would any manufacturer spend millions of dollars to build a factory and staff it with employees, only to have trump remove the tariffs and have their prices undercut by
cheaper overseas labor?
Trump says all sorts of things, what to watch are his actions.
Think of the pretty girl with a stage magician, her part of the act is to distract your attention.

So he tanked the market on purpose? Sounds like grounds for impeachment.

No, that is a consequence of setting the stage, an emotional response.
The markets will return to normal, when people have some clarity that lowering the
tariffs from other countries is a good idea.

Well, one silver lining is that Trump basically eliminated my capital gains taxes for the next several years. :(
Why, unless someone sold anything there is no realized gain or loss?

I guess that means no return of manufacturing to the US, once again trump lied.

Warren Buffett's move to sell stocks pays off amid tariffs turmoil

2 days agoBuffett's move last year to sell stocks and hoard $300 billion in cash has largely insulated his company from the tariff turmoil roiling the markets.

If you have cash on the sidelines, this is exciting. If you don't this is depressing as hell.
very exciting.
Like trying to catch a falling knife.

But yes, to those not retired or 10 yrs out from retirement, this is a great buying opportunity.

In 10 yrs, this will be nothing but a blip on the trend line.

me and Buffet have a problem where to put our PILES of cash in the mean time. i want to do some Social good please.

The market, the market, the market is not important to the individual investor. What is important is how savvy the investor is. Is the investor aggressive or conservative? Is the investor heavy into the AI world or diversified across the spectrum? How old is the investor? Is the investor firmly planted in the investments or panicky at the first tremor? How much risk is acceptable to the investor? And so on and so on.
The market is usually an indicator of the future of the economy, 6-9 months out.
Sure there are over reactions to certain news.

But it can predict if a recession is likely. That is not the best thing in the world for the economy.
It is very likely, since there's a R president and congress, a recession is about 85% certain to happen.

It's been that way going back to at least Reagan.

yes yes yes

I can give you a PO Box to send some good money to. It will be given to a great wonderful charity fund.

Let me know if you're interested.

Not at all, some types of manufacturing will return or increase production.
Shoes may not be one of them. The goal is to reduce our trade deficit, and overall our budget deficit.
Part of that is more people in the US working at higher paying jobs.
Another part is the government reducing spending by eliminating wasteful spending.

Or automation to take the place of those jobs. It's interesting that some are expecting these jobs to become higher paying jobs given the resistance there is to raise the wages of service workers here.

The lady on Fox News today was clearly smarter than any of us. She said President Trump is performing a complex balancing act and all of the above is true. Tariffs are going to be applied consistently to bring manufacturing back to the US, except when they're not due to negotiations to improve our trade with other countries, and it will overall bring a stronger economy to the US than ever before!

Aren't you buying all the contradictions!?!

a PO box? is it big enuf for Piles of Cash or do you want separate piles of Cash?

charity is fine, but business deals are better to increase our Piles of Cash. the cash will be sent in plain brown rappers and i trust that you will put it to very good use.

thanks.

Let me know if you're interested.

oh thank you so much.

many on this forum seem to Trust all kinds of things and should continue to do so.

not so much for me, i don't have a Television because i don't trust the Propaganda from both sides. let me know what i am missing please....

like are we in the Golden Age of america? are the Tariffs working or do we need more Medicine?

have they fixed the Voting machines so they work right and vote for the right candidates like the Orange guy? will he get a third and fourth term, or is that best left to Mosk and Jay dee younger ones. ?

Sadly, I think you are mistaken, the majority of manufacturing that does return will be performed by robotics, so not a huge amount of jobs to be had there. Textile manufacturing will not come back because US workers cannot work for the wages paid in Thailand and Vietnam. I agree with cutting wasteful spending, but that is not what is happening now. Musk and his crew of idiots are cutting jobs with no concern as to whether the jobs are needed, he should be sent packing immediately and a thoughtful study done to determine where cuts can be made without
further damage. Unfortunately cautious and thoughtful are not trump trademarks.

Or automation to take the place of those jobs. It's interesting that some are expecting these jobs to become higher paying jobs given the resistance there is to raise the wages of service workers here.
I see automation as a way for an US worker to produce many times what a low paid worker can produce, and
their company still make a great profit.
Think of it this way, A farmer with a mule can at most plant, grow and harvest about 40 acres of crops, but a farmer with a tractor
can plant, grow and harvest ten times than amount. Of course the farmer with a ten times larger crop needs a larger market.
Trumps moves are about getting the market ready. To some extent we need a working class in our trading partners as well,
so they can afford our products.

I haven't watched Fox news since Shepard Smith left, I wouldn't trust any of the others to give me the right time. We can, however count on them to stand firmly behind trump.

I would not call a few days a trend, this is a market reaction, and emotional response.
At some point greed wins over emotion, and investors will start picking up bargains.
I hope this bounces back fairly quickly.
This isn't a few days. The trend down started after the peak in February. The trend is now 2 months in.

Buffett isn’t playing the same game as me.

And he’s definitely not playing the same game as you.
