The change your oil every 3,000 miles is a myth created by Jiffy Lube types. My truck's recommendations are 5K for heavy driving and 10K for light driving and my mechanic confirmed about 7k-8K is often enough.

3K is too much. I do 5-6K, roughly.

On the flip side I once knew a guy who never... ever... changed his oil. Swore up and down he also never had a problem because of it. That's way too extreme for me, but I couldn't argue with his results. (I did make a mental note to never buy a used car from him.)

LOL. I knew a girl who bought a new car after her divorce and never changed her oil or checked it at all because she didn't know she needed to because her hubby had taken care of all that. She made it almost 100K miles before she blew her engine. She thought that those warning lights on her dashboard was bad wiring because they kept coming on and going off. :lamo

My old mechanic who worked on a lot of high dollar import cars and went on to work for some Indy car team as well said that if you change your oil too often it will do more damage than not that often because new oil has to be broken down by use to work properly in the engine.

Hi there - We are reaching out on behalf of Jiffy Lube Customer Service. The Jiffy Lube approach to oil change intervals — called Oil Change Schedule (OCS) — puts drivers in control of the vehicle preventive maintenance process. In fact, Jiffy Lube makes vehicle manufacturer recommendations conveniently available so drivers can choose when to return for their next oil change – whether it’s 3,000 miles or beyond. Jiffy Lube technicans will review a driver's individual driving habits and conditions, share the vehicle manufacturer recommendations, and advise on the recommended, customized oil change interval. If you have specific questions regarding the new approach, please e-mail us at jiffy-lube-customer-service@shell.com
