In the mid 1970s I was walking down a path in Florida I came across a place where someone dumped much stuff from the 1940s... And a Brownie Box Camera dated in the 1910s. SCORE....
Was it the original plain Jane Brownie? Or one of the pretty Art Deco ones designed by Walter Dorwin Teague?

I just throw my trash over the stockade fence into our neighbors yard when he isn't looking.

My city offers us free trash and yard waste pick up weekly. :)

It is from the tax revenue taken in from the profits of the taxes by businesses in the city.
You are telling me that businesses carry the tax burden for domestic garbage collection! I don't believe that.

Why don't you look up Des Peres, Missouri city government and see for yourself.

It says at no charge to the resident. It doesn't say how it is funded.

Well, I get a news letter from the city and every year they announce that once again we will not be charged for our trash/yard waste removal due to the taxes collected from the local city businesses. So, believe me or not 🤷‍♀️

Live rural, and trash is picked up weekly. It was the same in the small town I lived in. We used to have a smaller, independent trash hauler. He had maybe 15 or 20 trucks, and his driver's would often come get your container if you forgot to take it to the curb. The owner retired and sold out to Waste Management though. Prices went up, and that courtesy service disappeared.

We burn most paper products and all yard waste, to save space in the container for the stuff we can't burn.

That seems crazy to me, isn't that what taxes are for? Do you pay less in state or city tax maybe?

In North Carolina, property taxes are very low and here in Surry County, they are below State average. We do pay a portion of property tax for maintenance of the landfill and transfer stations, but nothing for collection, which is not offered.

I have a trailer and haul my own waste to the transfer station. No cost as long as you have a Surry County driver's license or ID. Some people make agreements with their neighbors to pick up trash. And there are businesses that offer scheduled trash pickup, but are not contracted with the county.

I compost all my organic trash and burn what I can burn, so I might go a month between trips to the transfer station.

Trash pickup weekly. Recycling is biweekly. Billed with sewer and water. "Brush and Bulky" pickup happens every few months at no additional cost.

In northeast Pennsylvania, we had a "pay as you throw" system. Garbage disposal is $4.00 per bag and you put the sticker on each bag to be collected. Stickers could be purchased at Dandy Minimarts and other locations.

Here in Surry County, North Carolina, there is no trash collection at all in the unincorporated county. Our four incorporated municipalities, Mount Airy, Dobson, Elkin and Pilot Mountain do have waste pickup. But in much of the mountain region there is no waste collection at all and even in the Atlantic Plain region and Piedmont region of North Carolina, waste collection is generally limited to municipalities. Instead, we are responsible for transporting our waste to the nearest transfer station, which is not too far away for me.

There is an upside in that it encourages composting of organic materials to reduce the amount of material you have to transport.

Why do all the options end in question marks?

Beginning to wonder if North Carolina is an outlier in not having garbage collection in rural areas.

I'm rural Illinois, and I know the nearest landfill for tipping garbage trucks is an hour away. But your transfer station being closer than that, distance shouldn't have that much influence. Maybe your roads aren't suitable. Garbage trucks are one of the hardest things on roads in many municipalities. They're often overweight, and their drivers tend to get off the road and into shoulders and even people's yards.

We have trash, recycling, compost & yard clippings weekly pickup. Three different trucks go around to pick it up. They're pretty organized.

Once a month any bulky items can be put out. That's anything - furniture, appliances etc.

Electronics we take ourselves to a central depot.

It's included in our taxes.

To be honest, I haven't looked into garbage pick up.
We live very rural and on a steep hill. Just the thought of rolling the bin up and down the hill is scary.
We do what most people around here do, we compost, separate the recyclables, bring the trash to the local waste drop off when we run errands.
In the summer we go more frequently.
