I see it like this: everyone has their signs they carry in demonstration. There are many issues to be addressed, not everyone must carry the same sign.
I don't much care for arguments/points/positions founded on what "they" said; I figure go argue with "they".
No.Does the Thought of Animals Suffering Bother You?
It does me...a lot, but then I recognize that my views on animals are not the same as everyone else's. Just curious if my views are somewhat "extreme" when it comes to animal welfare.

I'm a hunter. Yes. It does. I believe in ethical practices. Same for slaughterhouses.

Yeah, I'm sure animal welfare is high on your list of priorities.
Yes, however I realize that even in the wild, animals lives are not all peachy keen all the time. They suffer there too. What bothers me most is lack of some reasonable freedom of movement. Hogs in cages so tight the can't turn around, chickens and hens stacked nearly on top of each other with wire floors, these things bother me, both for the animal and selfishly because I can't imagine that level of livelong stress not having a negative effect on the flavor and quality of the meats derived from them.
So that bothers me. What doesn't bother me as much, again because it resembles wildlife existence, is the "cruelty" that has been documented during the harvesting of animals. Killing in the wild is often much crueler even than those horrible videos. Now as humans should we find a better way to kill just because we're smarter and have had a humane solution decades ago. Hence I will still do what I can reasonably do as a meat consumer to desire reasonable living and killing conditions for animals.
That covers the meat supply issues. As for other animals like pets and such. It bothers me more to see animals suffer than be killed. And again I would consider a dog in a small outdoor kennel, left unattended except for the obligatory feeding and watering, or one equally restricted by rope or chain length and otherwise neglected. Then there are those that sooooo love their pets they keep them alive even though they are in debilitating pain and barely get around, to me that's cruel.
Caged/fenced/tied for a period of work is not what I was commenting on. It's the dogs that are dumped outside thusly and basically never interacted with at all, just feed and watered, dirty kennels or restricted area, etc. Owned but essentially neglected. No breed should have to live that life. That last one is awful. I hate that. I can understand a dog left in a kennel while at work. Reasonable cage size, a toy, water, food, and all that. It depends on the dog. Some breeds handle that better than others (hound dog vs a German Shepard...one is lazy till you let him out...the other would go insane).

It is. Unlike your average non hunting citizens...I understand the Eco system, I hate idiots who release invasive species, I believe in proper management of public lands so that more encroachment doesn't kill off more wildlife, and the list goes on.
Mother Nature created predators for a reason. I am one of those. Humans are far more destructive to animals in other ways. I'm just not squeamish about my role.
Ps
Spay and neuter. Those who don't are awful.

Not sure I understand what you are saying.
My grandmother used to catch cats in traps and pitchfork them with the garden tiller through the holes of the trap. Possums + racoons too. That said, I do feel bad for animals. I do think there's too many cats though and that more of them need to be killed because they're killing off all the native bird species and it's a disaster and cats really are out of control.
There was something wrong with your grandmother.
Oh now I don't think that's true. You have to keep perspective that many older Americans grew up in rural areas with different cultures and views towards the killing of animals deemed "pests".
My aunt and great grandmother (still alive) trap squirrels in those rectangular mesh cages in their backyards and then shoot them through the cage and then freeze them in the freezer in the garage so they don't smell until they can have the trash take them away when it comes.

Taking a sharp object to a helpless and caged cat, stabbing it repeatedly, torturing it with a slow and painful death is not ok to me. Although I don't have cats, I'm glad she's not my neighbor.
What an awesome, heartwarming story. Why not just burn it alive in the cage for grins?
It's a 92 year old woman..
I think it's safe to say she's doing it (and has done it for her entire life, thousands++ of squirrels) out of cultural reasons and tradition and not "grins".
Be realistic. It's just dead frozen squirrels after all.
It can be said about anything that some people get judgmental and "they" (a sort of mythical group rarely observed) say all sorts of wacky things.
Pretty much, especially scorpions, **** scorpions
It bothers me immensely. Of course I have to weigh that against the hypocrisy of me not being a vegetarian, knowing how the animals are treated; that all need to be reformed. But yeah, such as poaching, whaling and other such barbarism should be met with instant death. Penalties for the abuse of domestic pets should be similarly harsh. The sickass shitbags who torture animals for fun should likewise be tortured beyond their limits. I think at that point, you've pretty much relinquished any rights you might otherwise have taken for granted. Like that guy who tied his dog to a tree and set it on fire. Had it been my call, he would have met with a horrific fate.
There are a great number of animals who show lasting emotional trauma. Even rodents and birds. It's not as rare in the animal kingdom as many humans like to believe.
If you've ever worked with rescue animals (I have -- my cat happens to be one), it is very clear that they have memories and experience emotional suffering, despite the fact that most domestic animals don't rank very high in the order of animal intelligence.
Ehhh. I suppose context matters. Even in the context of someone deliberately inflicting harm on an animal, it still depends on context.
I eat a lot of chicken, pork, and beef; I don't particularly care if the animal killed for my meal suffered beforehand, as we've already reached the threshold of death, which is the worst harm you can inflict on a living creature.
You're not asking about legality, so does the thought of someone like abusing their pet dog or neglecting them bother me? Okay, sure, it bothers me. Do I think there is any basis for any kind of law restricting such behavior? No, I do not - their animal is their property.
