Does the coronavirus-killing power of sunlight make it safe to go to the beach?

Does sunlight kill coronavirus? Not quite. - Los Angeles Times

President Trump has alleged that warmer weather could help slow the spread of the coronavirus, and a top official at the Department of Homeland Security repeated that claim this week. But many experts say there’s little evidence that hot, sunny days actually make beaches safer.

Although sunlight can help kill coronaviruses on surfaces, it doesn’t work fast enough to help beachgoers, said Andrea Armani, a professor of chemical engineering and materials science at USC.

“It doesn’t make it safe to go out to the beach because the time it takes for the sun to kill the virus is exceptionally long,” Armani said.

A coronavirus’ outer layer weakens as the temperature rises, Armani said. So when ultraviolet light from the sun heats up surfaces where the virus lands, its survival period will be somewhat shorter. (How much shorter depends on multiple factors, she added.)

So sunlight at the beach is no substitute for social distancing.

But if we could get it inside...through the skin...or some other way

So sunlight at the beach is no substitute for social distancing.

Outdoor transmission of the virus is near non-existent.

Social distancing is not some sort Diety to worship. It is not necessary for life, And in fact is harmful to society

Californians are going to kill each other off packing beaches the way they are. Might reduce the traffic and housing issues. Won't help Elon open the economy like he wants, though.

Not if you're closer than 6 feet from an infected person. They shed virus aerosol particles by the million into the air. And the pix I've seen of beach goers is that they usually are together in small groups, less than 6 feet apart by a good margin. And it only takes one virus particle to infect you.

So what?

You have no examples of demonstrated transmission at beaches.

And also the decision to not social distance should be up to the people and not liberal fascist governors

The "killing power" of sunlight is the production of vitamin D because you're out in the sunlight. Vitamin D deficiency has been noted in a high percentage of deaths due to the virus.

Discussion: Vitamin D levels are severely low in the aging population especially in Spain, Italy and Switzerland. This is also the most vulnerable group of population for COVID-19.

Conclusions: We believe, that we can advise Vitamin D supplementation to protect against SARS-CoV2 infection.

The FL infection data is being withheld from the public. And you must have seen all those spring breakers clustered together, arm in arm. I wonder what became of them as they dispersed back to their homes around the country?

I take Vitamin D2 50K International Units twice a week. That's such a high dose that it's by prescription. Good info.

I've taken Vitamin D3 for years (6000 IU daily). Now I take it along with vitamin K2. That way the calcium ends up in the bones where it belongs, instead of the soft tissue.

UV light doesnt kill...it sterilizes.

This Is like a game the media plays. Trump makes some statement and they go out of their way to find someone who will contradict him no matter what the statement is. A prof of chemical engineering and materials science commenting on infectious disease transmission? Give me a break.

Viruses on a surface last only a few minutes in direct sunlight.

You also really couldn’t prove they picked up the virus at the beach versus somewhere else. Also virtually no college aged spring breakers will even get sick enough for symptoms; and now they’re immune. So all the whining liberal Karens who mocked them are sitting in their houses with no antibodies posting stupid asinine condemnations of others on the internet.

I'm not interested in your alleged right to infect others.

Of course it isnt. Under direct sunlight, it takes time for UV to destroy microbes on surfaces but it will destroy pretty much most of them with prolonged exposure. Also, for some microbes the fact that the sun's heat dries out the microbe and any medium it's living in also aids in destroying them.

And then just think about the microbes that are not directly exposed to the sun...like the underside of a hand railing. Those will live much longer.

If anyone was dumb enough to believe that sunlight (UV) would destroy the virus when it left an infected person as a sneeze or cough...that's ridiculous. Our schools have failed.

The dolt of a president certainly didnt seem to understand anything about what he heard when he came in at the tail end of a briefing he was late to...and then just 'ran with' to try and look like he had ideas for medical researchers to try :doh

This is the barely coherent and grammatically inept speech of a man who desperately wants to be able to claim that he "cured coronavirus."

That's it, in a nutshell. When we do get a handle on this crisis, he wants to be able to pull out footage and declare "I called it! I said use this! I said try this! I told them to do this, it was my idea!" He's just doing it with lots of stupid stuff because he doesnt want to miss an opportunity. He's afraid 'the big one' will be mentioned and he wont get credit for it.

It's all about declaring himself the savior of the cv crisis and we'll hear all about it, esp in his campaign. (Which is basically each of his press briefings these days) --- Lursa

Liberal fascist? Do you really not know that those two terms are nearly opposites?

And how does it sterilize?
Are the things it sterilized still alive or are they dead

They are sterilized. They cant reproduce. Their DNA molecules are damaged as UV light has a shorter wavelength which penetrates viruses and bacteria. Although it can kill its ability to sterilize is where its highly effective. For any advanced fish tankers out there UV-c is extremely useful in controlling disease in your tank and will keep it that way as long as you change out the bulbs after their lifespan has expired. Your tank is effectively sterilized so you wont need those expensive meds to drop in your tank. You can build one for about 50 bucks. Bugs cant get a hold on your tank if your water is passed through a UV 24/7.

These folks think:

1) Liberal = big government
2) Fascist = big government
therefore,
3) Liberal = fascist.

The fact that they misidentify both authoritarianism and fascism is not a possibility that occurs to them.

No, they’re not. The political left was the main driver of fascism in Europe, every piece of the Nazi ideology was modernity taken to its logical cinclusion.

Liberal. Do you know what it means? No you do not. Will you look it up in a dictionary? No you will not.
I don't care what kind of fantasy you've invented to feed your dysfunctional remake of history. If you're an adult and you don't know that a liberal can't be a fascist and a fascist can't be a liberal you either were incapable of learning while you were in school or you were raised by wolves and never went to school.
Last chance. Here's what people who are actually fluent in English already know...
