Do we really need a trillion dollar a year military

I wish it were true, but under the Constitution it's one of the few inherently government mandated duties.
That is not really true in the context of the question.
Provide for the common defense does not mean provide everything necessary for the common defense if that's what you are referring to. And in fact, virtually all of the founders were dead set against us having a standing army.

to defeat the russians?

Seems all they have is their nuclear weapons. The entire western world wants no part of a nuclear exchange with Russia.

so is all this conventional military really kind of unnecessary?
The problem in this country is not how much we spend on defense, but what we spend it on and why it costs so much. The F22 costs over 800 million dollars and we are now going to spend over 10 billion dollars to upgrade the 180 or so planes we have. It is all about the military industrial complex as Ike called.
