"I have a much broader base to build a winning coalition on," she said in an interview with USA TODAY. As evidence, Clinton cited an Associated Press article "that found how Sen. Obama's support among working, hard-working Americans, white Americans, is weakening again, and how whites in both states who had not completed college were supporting me."

Clinton makes case for wide appeal - USATODAY.com

I am curious as to what people think. Is the media trying to create the news? Or is Hillary saying that America won't vote for a black man?

I think she is saying that Obama's support among whites in general has weakened, which is true. I don't see it playing the "race card" any more than Obama has done. She's not saying don't vote for him because he's black.

This is the media trying to create news. Everybody talks about now Obama overwhelmingly gets the black vote and nobody says he is playing the race card, do they? How is Clinton saying she gets the white vote (which is the majority of the population in general) playing the race card?

Yes, but who is she to say that they won't vote for him once she is eliminated? Why else would she bring it up but to argue that they won't vote for him? She is basically saying that white voters won't vote for him. That is why she is supposedly more electable even though she is losing the primary.

No hard working white voters voting for Obama I guess....Which is why he beat her like a drum in some of the whitest states in this country. You know. Iowa, Utah, Connecticut, Idaho, Kansas, Minnessota, Missouri, Nebraska, Maine, Vermont, Wyoming - We all know those states are just loaded with blacks.

Obama hasn't brought up racial lines as a reason he is more electable. Hillary has. It is irrelevant as to whether Obama or McCain will get those votes. It doesn't make her more electable in a different election. Republican usually get that vote that she is touting. It doesn't mean that she would get that vote against McCain.

Most of those states are predominately white Republicans and went to Bush in the last election. Just because Obama can beat out Clinton in the primaries in those states doesn't mean he can beat McCain there. I know a few (very few) number of Republicans in South Dakota (also one of the whitest states in this country) who are putting their support behind Hillary first, John McCain second. It's not a strong argument on her part, but it makes some sense.

She is not saying all whites won't vote for him, but I agree she is arguing that his appeal to white voters has weakened, the implication being this will hurt him the in the national election where the proportion of black voters will be roughly half of what it is in the Democratic primaries.

And she has a point.

The black population is about 15% overall. Since they are overwhelmingly Democrats, the rough estimate is that they make up about 30% of the Democratic vote.

Obama is barely ahead in the Democratic nomination race pulling 90%+ of the black vote. With the proportional representation of that base halved in the general election, it's a fair question to ask whether Obama will be able to pull in enough support from the other 85% of the country to carry the election.

It's not racism or the race card. It is a fact.

How does she know that her white supporters won't vote for him in the general election?

That's a good point, I didn't mean to imply that white Dems supporting Clinton would abandon the party because Obama is elected though that was the implication of my post. Some would and it would be an issue for independents generally.

Because he's black, independent_thinker. Sheesh!

;)

I think the stuff about Wright Ayers etc. are more a factor in the weakening support than his skin color.

Depends on how you define "race card," a semantic debate I'll pass on.

Fair enough, but I would have defined it as "any argument that makes the race of the subject relevant to politics."

LOL...Thats because the whites in that state are Republicans or independents who could give a **** less about the Democratic nomination.

Republicans and independents who might vote for her instead of McCain after Dem v Rep debates and campaigns but may be less likely to vote for Obama due to his race.

So are you calling her supporters racists?

Proof?

Proof? And what does this have to do with my statement that Clinton's statement suggested that there weren't hard working Americans willing to vote for Obama? Let me guess. No hard workers in North Carolina? ;)

Thats a huge mis characterization of her words... lets see the quoted text from the OP again shall we?

Hmm...
A. Clinton was CITING AN AP ARTICLE.
B. She stated that the AP Article "found" that Obama's support amount hard working Americans is weakening.

YOU stated that SHE came up with the idea that there are NO hard working Americans voting for Obama.

Hmmm....... Apparently your assumptions are king around here eh Hatuey.

BTW your name reminds me of the noise I make when I cough up spit.

I didn't state they were her supporters did I?

In fact I stated just the opposite in the first 2 sentences of the post.

Tryreading.

Your post only had two sentences. Trycounting.

You are admitting that a significant voter block is racist yet you think that blacks don't have things so bad?

Blacks have been proving to be quite a significant voter block as well, oh with South Carolina and North Carolina just to name a few.

Yeah, so? Hillary doesn't think those states count. ;)

So Caine makes an assertion without proof. Why am I not surprised?

Hearsay. Next

B. She stated that the AP Article "found" that Obama's support amount hard working Americans is weakening.

More hearsay. Next

YOU stated that SHE came up with the idea that there are NO hard working Americans voting for Obama.

False. That is what Clinton said and used hearsay as a way to validate her words. Next?

Hmmm....... Apparently your assumptions are king around here eh Hatuey.

BTW your name reminds me of the noise I make when I cough up spit.

What assumption, Clinton provides the words of some obscure AP article. No assumption. It's called hearsay.

BTW Your name reminds me of little boys who go into juvi with names like Tank and come out with names like Tina. I guess it's just a matter of time before it goes from Caine to Clare. :2wave:
