Homeland Security now going after small business for copyright infringement. That seams like some thing that should be beneath them. Aren't they supposed to be getting to the bottom of terrorist plots, not doing panty raids for Major league Baseball.
Complains that DHS is doing too much
Complains that DHS is not doing enough
in 2001-2002, i was a libertarian who opposed the patriot act and a new DHS agency. i was told by Republicans that the new powers would not be abused, and i was asked why i wanted to help the terrorists (well, actually, they asked "why do you want to help the terrorist?" they never could get the plural right on that for some reason.)
welp, there you go. the patriot act is being used for whatever they want, we have an agency that records literally everything that happens electronically, and the DHS is raiding places to track down fake underwear.
i am Jack's complete lack of surprise.
Creating DHS has nothing to do with it. This would happen whether there was or wasnt a DHS. It would just be done under some other name. Govt is the problem, not just parts of govt.
I dont think you understand the definition of expedient
this argument is identical to a liberal posting "it's corporations that are the problem. not just some corporations." it's not that monochromatic.
But it is. DHS is simply a symptom of the real problem, which is big government in general. DHS was supposed to be a fix for the problem of many separate departments not communicating which each other. But all it did was add yet another layer to the bureaucracy. The solution is/was the same in both cases. Less govt, less power.
Perhaps practical, logical, or appropriate would have been a better choice of words.
While knock-off merchandise might not seem to fall under the purview of Homeland Security, ICE says*HSI plays a "leading role in targeting criminal organizations responsible for producing, smuggling and distributing counterfeit products."
The enforcement, while having nothing to do with immigration, apparently falls within the "customs" mandate of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.*
Asked why counterfeit merchandise raids like this are handled by ICE, Neudauer explained that U.S. Customs investigators were placed within ICE when the Department of Homeland Security was formed in 2003. Those investigators have jurisdiction over hundreds of federal statutes, mostly involving customs-related issues. ICE also runs an intellectual property rights coordination center.
Lets start off by pointing out that DHS is the proper agency to handle this

A lawsuit would take more time than a cease and desist, it would cost more taxpayer money to have a trial and it would probably bankrupt a small business.
So in short to satisfy your anti-DHS bloodlust you want to waste time, taxpayer money and destroy a small business. You sir are a monster.
i don't agree with your bumper sticker slogan conservatism any more than i agree with monochromatic anti-corporate liberalism. reality is much more nuanced.
Im not a conservative. That was bumperstick libertarianism.
Protecting intellectual property is one of the things they are supposed to be doing.

Law enforcement enforces law, outrage ensues
i'm not a libertarian.
Now that we're square on that, where is the nuance in being specifically opposed to DHS in contrast to being generally opposed to big govt, period?
Again, unless these textiles were printed outside the US, which is unlikely, this is not a customs violation. It is a trademark violation. In my experience, these cases are handled in civil courts, if they get that far. Generally it's a cease and desist letter.
It doesn't matter whether or not it would cost more to pursue through civil or criminal courts. It probably would cost more to defend a criminal charge. But that is not relevant. Law is not based on the cost to defend.
There is possibly more to this story, but from the article, DHS has better things to do.
Why aren't they enforcing border security? We have immigration laws, too.
So, the DHS actually saved this small business from a ruinous lawsuit by raiding their panties and taking them off of he shelf?
Do you feel more secure knowing that the government has created such a powerful and all encompassing new agency to keep the homeland secure?
That is what happened in this case maybe you should read up on it
So because they arent up to par on enforcing immigration law they shouldnt bother enforcing any laws?
Then it is a copyright issue, not a customs violation.

As I said you should read up on the situation
No the MLB saved a small business by only requesting a cease and desist and not suing them as you would have done
Well i dont feel less secure
Homeland security can't keep us safe from underwear until they manage to declare thong underwear to be acts of terror, which in my opinion they are.
