I think it would have done him no favors, and just help the people smearing him. People like GottaHurt and TOT and others that routinely refered to him as "Hussein" would've been calling him Barack anyways. Extremists or conspiracy theorists would've likely tried to paint it as yet another thing he's "hiding", just like they've tried to do with the Madrassa thing or trying to point to him wearing an african garb when visiting there as proof he's a muslim or at least to give that idea.
I do think it would've hurt him as joe average uninformed political follower gets it, and begins to believe stuff. I have actually ran into people in real life that honestly believe he's a secret muslim. I've got in arguments with my mother who still believes in part that he is somehow tied to muslims.
Ever listen to the republican talk shows often? Limbaugh repeatedly used the "Hussien" thing, as did for a long time many of his callers when talking about it. You still will hear people calling in occasionally claiming how he's tied to Muslims.
Yes, sadly, there are either uninformed or extremist right wingers out there that DO believe he's either a muslim or secretly working with muslims.
I'm sorry, I'm not going to sit here and rail about every and any poster that jumped upon the "He's not telling us everything about himself", "he's a muslim/was a muslim", "hussein hussein hussein", band wagon. Furthermore, DP is not a accurate subsection of America as a whole in regards to politics. Even further, still, please show me where I said this was something that all the right wing would do.

There are only one or two whacko's that give the right a bad name. In fact, to these people, even I look like a liberal. (Although, I do want to make it clear that I am NOT a social conservative.)
However, all to often, we are "lumped" together with these airheads simply because they insist they are conservatives.
We are all individuals here in the US. All of us (with the exception of too few to matter) have opinions and thoughts that sway this way and that on the liberal to conservative chart. Only a partisan sheephead would be so restricted as to not to be able to flex. But these folks do NOT define the conservative movement.
REAL conservatives are really some cool people. We have been getting a bad rap lately. We have many liberal friends. In fact, we'll drink beer with just about anybody. We have many multi cultural friends. We live and let live. We'll watch your house while you're on vacation and take in your mail. We are very charitable people too, regardless of what the whacos would have you to believe.
I say to everyone....
If you accept the fact that taxes are a necessity but you want to keep a tight grip on how your money is spent... you are a conservative.
If guns scare the hell out of you and you'll never want one, but respect the right of your neighbor to keep and own guns for recreational, keep-sake, and defense reasons.... you are conservative.
If you want the sick bastard that molests our children to be deep fried, but only after every possible defense can be offered on his behalf, regardless of time and costs to be sure he/she is, in fact, guilty...you are conservative.
If you think the guy who sells cigarettes, drugs, alcohol to our children needs to go sit with the child molester... you are conservative.
(However, it's ok to be a conservative and grow yourself a little behind the barn should you take a notion.)
If you believe that marriage is between a man and a woman and is a covenant beyond civil recordings, you most likely are a conservative. But if you think that such decisions of moral compass should be put in the hands of the government to regulate, you are NOT a conservative. That would make you a SOCIAL conservative. They are a branch of conservatism. I suppose we'll have to own up to that. (That being said, when we all get to heaven, we'll need to tip-toe past the Social Conservative neighborhood. They think they are the only ones who will be up there. :rofl )
I could go on.............
We all have views that go to and from. We'll, not all of us I suppose. Even gold isn't 100% pure.
