Data for this week thus far indicates that the US is on track for a decrease in Sars-CoV-2 virus assigned deaths compared to the previous week. This comes after four straight weeks of increases. Deaths appear to 'track' reported cases by about 3 weeks.

US daily deaths per 100,000 population, however, remain orders of magnitude above those in Germany.

Those two statistics pretty much sum up the situation.

Regards, stay safe 'n well. Remember the Big 3: masks, hand washing and physical distancing.

According to Johns Hopkins, the death rate in the US is 48.37 and Germany is 11.07. You really shouldn't use terms such as "orders of magnitude" that you don't know what they mean.

Hi!

Thank you for your evaluation of my understanding of mathematics. [Ed.: N.B., Torus has done graduate level work in mathematics, including statistics.]

Did you, perchance, happen to catch the word 'daily' in my post and did you check yesterday's US Covid-assigned deaths vs. Germany's? I would be pleased if you would report Johns Hopkin's' values for both countries for 8/5/2020 as a 'per 100,000' value. [Ed.: or 8/4/2020, for that matter.]

Regards, stay safe 'n well. Remember the Big 3: masks, hand washing and physical distancing.

Thank you for the update.

It looks like the steps taken to slow the virus down, including masking that many people and some governors are ordering are helping to bring the numbers down. Hopefully we continue practicing the Big 3 and the numbers of Covid cases and deaths continue going down.

8/4 the number of daily deaths was US: 543, Germany 8. A single order of magnitude above Germany. Some days more.

As for summing up any situation. You've done no such thing.

It would have been more correct if he'd just called it a $#!t ton, I agree.

Hi.

A single order of magnitude above single digits is a number in the double digits. The next order of magnitude above that is a number in the triple digits.

[Drops mike ...]

Goodbye.

Strange the number of times people have this long drawn out point in their head and only come here to post a narrow point and expect to have that support a conclusion they didn't make. Voila doesn't cut it.

As the saying goes, 'From your lips ...'.

With lots of effort by we, the people, we may reach the point where we can successfully apply contract tracing to suppressing this pandemic in the US. Unfortunately, there's a segment of our population that appears more concerned with personal privacy than with eradicating Covid in the US. Nothing's perfect, including us.

Regards, stay safe 'n well.

Okay then the 'deeper' explanation is, there's no use quibbling over the meaning of 'magnitude' when America's infection and death rates are both many times higher than Germany's - in sheer numbers and proportionately.

America has has a f***load more deaths than it should have. And a good portion of those could have been stopped.

Semantic 'gotcha' moments are usually aimed at the poster not the topic and seek to derail with thread with personal contests while missing the big picture.

New infections in Arizona dropped from 4000 a day to about 2000 a day after the mask mandate was ordered.

Hi!

Thank you for your post.

As you correctly noted, the point was Germany has been doing [Ed.: or not doing,] things which have resulted in a far different result, measured in Covid assigned deaths per unit population. We here in the US would do well to pin down exactly what those steps/actions were. It will save American lives, either now or in the next pandemic. That we're seeing no evidence of this being done suggests a certain insularity [Ed.: or just plain overbearing smugness,] here.

I suffer nit-picking quibblers for a comment or two and then I avail myself of the 'Ignore' feature of this site. It nicely solves the problem for me going forward. I also attempt to respond politely to all legitimate comments and queries. Once in a while I'll miss a comment if it doesn't contain a quote.
