Debt Collector Is Faulted for Tough Tactics in Hospitals

Creeps nothing, but, creeps..........

I beleive that Accretive stands to lose 62 million in revenue as a result of being dropped as Fairview's the debt collectors.

"Minneapolis-based Fairview Health Services has announced that it ended a contract with a consulting firm that the Minnesota attorney general says misused private patient information and aggressively collected debt from patients in emergency rooms. The Star Tribune reports that Fairview broke from the Chicago-based Accretive Health last month. Fairview says in a release that it has been working closely with Attorney General Lori Swanson in her investigation of Accretive and shares her concerns about its practices. Fairview signed a contract in 2010 to let Accretive run payment services, including debt collection, at its hospitals and clinics."

"An inquiry into Accretive Health by Minnesota’s attorney general has prompted one client to end the company’s billing and collection contract.

Fairview Health Services said its board of directors terminated the contract last month during Lori Swanson’s inquiry into Accretive Health. “We take the concerns raised by Minnesota Attorney General Lori Swanson very seriously,” Fairview said a written statement. “We have been in consultation with her on these issues for several months. We share many of her concerns and have already taken actions to address them.”

I can't believe this is actually legal. Accosting patients in the Emergency Room, and threatening to withhold treatment if past debts aren't paid first? Doing the same thing to women in labor?

Unbelievable.

I want to question its legality, but... maybe they get around it by contracting for the company to "manage" their paperwork staffing.

It's amazing some of the ****ty things that debt collection companies get away with.

A universal system, free at the point of use, paid for through taxation, makes all that nastiness go away.

 Yet another drive-by snipe about how much better things are across the pond.

How would it prevent *that* situation anymore than just not allowing *that* situation to be legal to begin with?
