I would say there is no possible way of knowing. People with no symptoms give it to other people who have no symptoms who then go to work at a nursing home and kill 13 people. By the time that person is tested he may no longer test positive. Plus if it animals con contract and spread this disease that just confounds things even worse. My cat can give it to a mouse who gives it to my mothers cat or dog and so on then finally to her.

That is why we should have been doing extensive research on the different coronavirus strains going back 20 years. We already knew how the flu can go from no big deal to a pandemic one year to the next. Instead the can was kicked down the road until the inevitable happened. I blame our entire medical industry leaders and congress. Where was the funding and the research to protect us. Hell they didn't even have enough masks for their workers let alone the people of this country. Absolute failure on their part. No if, ands, or buts.

This nation lost far more than 50k in the American War in SE Asia. Think about it.

but you won't get infected by them breathing on you...which is different than what you are discussing. I pulled a man out of a burning car...yes, I could have burned to death in the process(happened Dec 5, 2019 so this isn't a hypothetical) but the alternative was letting him die. I chose to put myself in danger...but at no point could he have infected me with his internal bleed or his broken bones.

57,939 were the number of US forces killed in Vietnam.
116,516 died in WW1
50,000 died in the American revolution
over a million died in WW2
and over a million in the Civil war

What everyone is not realizing when comparing war deaths...is you cannot catch anything from soldiers...you can get shot...but unless war is necessary we should not be waging war.

So to return to normal life, work, eating at restaurants, going to movies, etc, how many people are you willing to let die per day?

It's going to be months before we get a vaccine. We can't self quarantine for that long.

Same number of people will die, they will just be more spread out so health systems are less overwhelmed. So since it's likely there won't be a change in deaths from the virus we can move on to other numbers. How people are you OK with sending into poverty, how many retirements ruined, how many suicides, ect are you OK with having for no change in end results?

False choices. It is not either or. You stop the virus first. You have no idea how many people will die after. Poverty and ruined retirements do not equal deaths. Here are son facts about mortality rates during the Great Depression.

Really? You had no way of knowing if that guy had Ebola when you ran over there. We NEVER have any idea if the people around us are infected with something contagious. Maybe we shy away from the ones that LOOK sick but you don't know if the person that sat on the toilet seat before, much less the one you used to talk to in the checkout at the grocery store, you was carrying some kind of plague.

Like my "guesses' about when the Covid-19 was known about in Wuhan on 11-17, the number or people that would have flown to and from China between 11-17 and January 31st? THOSE guesses?

there is no ebola outbreak and if I were to be infected, it wouldn't be due to the car accident.
