What exactly would sending them to jail achieve other than making it much harder for them to get a job in future?
They pled guilty so obviously know they did wrong and aren't hardened criminals.
I'm sure the judge involved had her reasons for giving the decision she did and thought it was the appropriate result as she had all the information at hand.

This need you guys have to punish people is why the US has so many people in prison and who re-offend because the system makes getting a job after you've been in prison for petty crimes.
Other countries use probation a lot more than the US and have way lower levels of recidivism.
maybe, just maybe the US could learn something from how Scandinavia deals with criminals but nope, being tough on crime and treating everyone like utter scum is what you guys love the most.

It's really a double edged sword here.

If recidivism wasn't so bad, or if 15 yr olds who committed crimes didn't turn into 18 yr olds committing the same (or worse crimes) we likely would have a different mindset.
The want/desire/push (something) is missing in a lot of our youth for many different reasons but the want to be better has to exist, and then the drive to DO better has to as well.

They don't currently, in a lot of instances. So what do you do? You let them out, they go on to commit worse crimes, and get excoriated for it (rightly) , or you have harsh punishment for them and get excoriated for it as well.

It likely should have fallen in between somewhere, they should have done some actual time, and not gotten probation. Perhaps that would teach them the valuable lesson. Letting them walk teaches nothing though.

But at the end of the day, we have got to reach the segments of the population that most need to change, and stop excusing them. They need education, not socialization. They need purpose, not despair. They, and the leaders of whatever communities they are apart of need to be the ones most outspoken about the need to change. In most cases, they are not, they are too busy covering up and making excuses why they can't be held accountable.

I made no excuses. I simply pointed out that a street fight doesn't warrant prison time, especially when no one was seriously injured.

Just to note, we have no idea what exactly happened and what sparked the fight. But that clearly doesn't stop you from jumping to conclusions and automatically side with the white guy.
