The number of deaths by gunshot in the United States of America, year to date, stands at 3,505. That's an average of 43 each day, and a 24 hour increase of 40. The hot days and the overheated tempers of summer lie ahead.

Of those 3505 deaths, 52 were children aged 0-11 years. Another 249 were teens ages 12-17. That's a total of 301 children's lives which were cut short by a bullet, slug or shot. That averages between 3 and 4 children killed each day somewhere in the United States of America.

Based upon the data thus far, 2024 is on track for a total of 15,794 deaths by gunshot.

To date, there have been 289 reported instances of accidental shootings.

Regards, stay safe 'n well . . . 'n un-shot.

If you think you are going to shame or shock any gun supporters into questioning their position, forget it. They will be happy to lose their own children to guns than give them up.

I learned this about human psychology with the Covid pandemic. To defy doctors, specialists and government and cling to their beliefs, folks were literally willing to choose death- for both themselves and their loved ones. Sure there were some who regretted their decisions as their loved ones, or they themselves were fighting for their last breaths- but they were a minority. Most died happy they didn’t give big government or authorities an inch and “owned the libs”.

Guns are no different. They would rather watch themselves and their loved ones wallow in blood than give in. There is no amount of death and suffering they are not willing to put themselves, and others, through- to maintain their pride and stubbornly cling to their beliefs. You are not going to enlighten or shame them with dry facts and figures and statistics.

Ditto for climate change.

You are dealing with true believers in a death cult. And you are trying to convince them with facts, figures, and statistics. Good luck.

Hi, ataraxia.

There are, in all probability, many of my fellow Americans who will fit your description. They will continue to accept the beliefs of their cult and either ignore or accept the damage it causes. There are others, though, who might eventually decide that enough is enough and take action. Given a sufficient number of them, we could see a concerted action that results in an actual significant reduction in gunshot deaths in the United States of America.

Though an agnostic, I note that Christ taught that few are beyond redemption.

"Give me liberty or give me death." Obviously their own death won't change their minds, but the death of a loved one might. A parent who has lost a child to gun suicide is more likely to give up their guns, or at least secure them properly.

It's true what you say about cults, but cults are a family substitute and sometimes the real thing wins them back.

Note that the OP's figures for gun deaths 2024 don't include suicides. But it's legitimate to deal with suicide separately, because the "victim" is also the perpetrator, and the highest rate of suicide is actually in over 85's (source) where unendurable suffering is likely the motive.

I certainly hope you are right. But I will just point out that as gun violence is increasing, gun laws are liberalizing.

Hi again.

All the more reason to try to raise awareness in those who might be willing to take action.

Yep. It's a little like watching folks "owning the libs" with the Covid crisis. People will wallow in their own blood before that happens.

But congratulations. Pride in this:

Is no different that pride in this:

Now do the car owners and drivers who initiate their own children into the cult of the SUV. Hundreds of thousands of casualties a year and all in the cause of personal convenience.

Is the bigotry in service of the political partisanship, or does the partisanship demand bigotry?

You should lose the hate and try to find some contentment in your life.
