Former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday he will campaign for mayor of New York City as an independent candidate, staying in a crowded field running against surging left-wing Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani.

In a video, Cuomo, who last month suffered a bruising loss to Mamdani in the Democratic primary, announced he was making another run to combat the progressive Mamdani, who he said “offers slick slogans but no real solutions.”

“The fight to save our city isn’t over,” Cuomo said. “Only 13 percent of New Yorkers voted in the June primary. The general election is in November and I am in it to win it.”

Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams also is running as an independent in the general election and Curtis Sliwa — founder of the 1970s-era Guardian Angels anti-crime patrol — is again on the Republican line.

Wow, this is looking like a real mess. Mamdani won the DNC primary, but both Cuomo and Adams will be running as independents. If this all plays out into the general election, it presents a real chance for a Republican to take the Mayorship. This could stand to split the Dem vote 3 ways.

We'll see how it all plays out, but it would be pretty funked up if this goes through.

Cuomo should not be doing this. His time's up.

Curtis Sliwa?

Not a chance. I think Cuomo and Adams will be drawing from the same pool - the people who voted for Cuomo in the Dem primary.

Mamdani got 250,000 more votes in the Democratic primary than Sliwa got in the general election in 2021.

So much for the 'Vote Blue No Matter Who' rhetoric. Man, I hate Establishment Dems so much.

Cuomo is betting Mamdani is his own worst enemy and will alienate a large percentage of his voters. Cuomo will be there to scoop them up at election time.

Maybe they want a pay day.

Cuomo got just shy of 44% of the vote. If Adams and Cuomo took 44% of the general Democratic votes, that would be enough to sink Mamdani.

I guess that NYC has ranked voting, yes? So maybe that would factor in. Or was that just for the Dem Primary?

Cuomo would know all about alienating voters.

Imagine thinking any notable number of Mamdani voters would drop him for Cuomo. Hilarious. 😄

Just for the D Primary. The general election is not ranked choice - if it was, I imagine that Cuomo might squeak by Mamdani.

But in a 4-way winner-takes-all race, I think that Mamdani will mostly likely win. Sliwa is not really a factor in this race.

Adams and Coumo would rather a Republican win. They're cut from the same corrupt clothe.

NYC decides its mayor by plurality. I’d say the Republican has a good chance of winning with the Democrats split three ways.

Why? This will be an interesting election. Republican nominee Curtis Sliwa. Democratic Party nominee Zohran Mamdani, with independents, Eric Adams, Cuomo and Jim Walden. Normally, I wouldn’t be paying any attention to a NYC mayor’s election. But all the post here on DP piqued my interest. Who wins is irrelevant to me. I think it’s great to have this many candidates on the ballot. Give the people of NYC a chance at a real choice instead of the normal hum drum republican vs democrat.

FFS....just go away Cuomo.

You keep that faith alive.

To his credit, Sliwa has actually been defending Mamdani against the very racist attacks that Cuomo and Adams have condoned. But he's got no chance.

This corrupt, serial groper of women is not a serious candidate.

Indeed; it's only relevant and taken to heart when the candidate is someone Dem party brass, and its war chest, approves of; an upstart like Mamdani or AOC who rejects the neoliberal/third way consensus? Forget it.

Such hypocrisy can also be clearly seen with respect to notions like 'winning/pragmatism over purity' and 'politics of the possible' by the way, so often used to as a cudgel against progressives. For example, as establishment Dems were clamouring to push Beto, they didn't once chastise him for obviously self-destructing his campaign by running on gun control in Texas or otherwise pressure him to change course.

Meanwhile, Kamala was coerced to, and did, almost wholly drop her focus on and rhetoric confronting cost of living, by far and away the top issue of the 2024 POTUS election, evidently because her plan had an anti-corporate approach and lean.

At the end of the day, when it comes to present Democrat leadership, their priority is not about party solidarity, or even winning; it's about governance exactly how they, and their most prominent donors want it.

NYC is great place to live for criminals

NYC is great place to live for criminals

1) NYC has a lower overall crime rate than many other large cities.

2) The worst criminals in NYC wear a suit and work on Wall Street.

3) If you cared about crime would wouldn't be worshipping the NYC criminal currently occupying the Oval Office, where he and his administration continue to break the law on a daily basis.

Vote for Cuomo, because he knows how to use jumper cables!

Turnout for the general election will be in the low 20s. How is this even considered legitimate?
