I know I shouldn't be surprised by this but WTF?!?

The name, age, race, birth and death dates were included
for all 672 listed in the coroner’s records. In many cases, burials were consigned to Pauper’s
Field because the families could not pay the costs of burial services. Attorneys Crump and Dennis Sweet of Jackson called for a full review of all 672 cases Wednesday.

They knew who these people were (at least most of them), who their families were (for most of them) and they didn't notify any next of kin before burying them.

Good grief, they actually call it Pauper's Field? That's cold.

Had to read to see if this was modern day America, rather than some 18th century thing. Yep, huge WTF from here, too, bud... this feels like it should be in a Dickens novel or something.

I'd have to believe there are worse places to fall on hard times, but America sure feels like it's near the top of the list.

Man! Even up here, if you die penniless, the government at least provides enough funding for a cremation and a meh urn.

Yeah, but the first thing I thought of when I read it was did the government here, or the church, notify the parents of those Native kids in unmarked graves at residential schools?

It's mentioned in the article above, but this is what was the catalyst for checking on this and it is just awful.

This one sounds like an intentional coverup.

Why are they not investigating these homicides and deaths? Yes, I get that some of them are likely overdoses or accidents or suicides, and those should have their families informed too, but there are several that are almost certainly murder or manslaughter situations. All these need to be investigated and these officers, government officials need to be held accountable and stop charging these parents, relatives for their mistakes, or worse, coverups.

Some family members said they were surprised when they learned that they have to “buy back” the remains of their loved ones in order to give them a proper burial in a better graveyard.

WTF?!?

"Are there no prisons? Are there no workhouses?"

Now that's just full blown ****ed up.

Yeah. You have a paupers field so people who nobody cares enough about to pay for a funeral can have a proper burial, that’s a good thing

Why do they need their own field? Are the regular cemeteries full, or is it classist thing? And why stop at calling it a pauper's field? Why not just call it broke ass field? Worthless meadow? Why not just "the dump"?

Sorry, i don't get this concept at all... maybe we're spoiled up here, i dunno, but this seems really gross.

You need to buy a plot in a “regular” cemetery since most cemeteries are private and generally run by trust funds for maintenance
or is it classist thing?
Class is real and exists, if you’re low class you don’t get nice things like upper class people
And why stop at calling it a pauper's field?
Because that’s the correct name for it
Why not just call it broke ass field?
Because that’s not the proper term
Worthless meadow? Why not just "the dump"?
Because it’s called the paupers field

You probably just burn the cadavers of paupers which is immoral as it denies them their body for the resurrection

Yeah so you think we should burn paupers and not give them a proper burial

It destroys the body, and is an anti-Christian act
Death and decomposition destroys the body, resulting in purification and skeletonization. Besides, since you do not know the religious belief, fealty, wishes of, and least of all being legal next of kin of the deceased, it is not your place to dictate how a corpse should be disposed of. Cremation is more practical and economical.

... a proper burial in a better graveyard ...
^ something sought by people who cared so much they did not know the whereabouts of their kin

this is nothing more than crump making another pass at accessing public money

Well. it is Mississippi.
Even the illustrious citizens of Alabama look down their noses at Mississippi.

Sure bud, that's what i said... lol

Out of curiosity, what prompted this response? I disengaged politely, why the snark? Just asking in case you thought i was being an asshole for some reason, I'd love the feedback if you care to give it. I backed out when our chat took a religious turn, as I'm slow to debate religion. Did you feel like my response warranted the snark and misrepresentation, and if so why? Genuinely curious... I'm trying to be a little less fighty these days. :)
