I'm starting a thread to record nominees for the 1st Annual Covid-19 Darwin Award. This award is reserved for people who, in complete disregard for their fellow Americans, refuse to buy into the "hype" or the "hoax" called COVID-19 but who nonetheless end up turning up their toes due to the disease. My first nominee: Army veteran Richard Rose III:
Imagine. He was 37 years old, with no underlying health conditions as far as his family knew. He survived two tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. I nominated him because he bragged about making multiple visits to a bar in June and traveling out of town. I appreciate his service to the country, but I can't muster much sympathy for him. His death was likely due to his own stupidity. I mean, I'm sorry for his family, but for him I just can't make it happen.
Then reality struck:Richard Rose III, an Army veteran who spent nine years in the United States Army according to his obituary, died on July 4. He was 37.
Rose’s death gained notoriety on social media after expressing that he was “not buying a (expletive) mask” less than three months before his death.
“I’ve made it this far by not buying into that damn hype,” he said in a post published April 28.
Ohio veteran, 37, who refused to wear a mask, died of COVID-19
The day following his announcement that he had contracted the novel coronavirus, Rose shared that he was having difficulty breathing, writing in a Facebook post, “This covid s*** sucks! I’m so out of breath just sitting here.”
