Cops: Angry 4-year-old blasts babysitter with shotgun

Police say a 4-year-old boy shot his babysitter Sunday because the 17-year-old stepped on his foot.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that the boy "retrieved a shell from a drawer in a back bedroom, grabbed a 20-gauge single-shot shotgun from a closet and loaded the weapon ... returned to the living room, and in front of another 17-year-old boy and other children, shot [Nathan] Beavers."

Beavers was treated for wounds from the birdshot, the paper says. The blast also injured another Jackson County, Ohio, teen, according to the Associated Press.

The shooter, who we're not identifying because of his age, isn't facing any charges.

"He knew it was wrong. He'd seen guns loaded and shot before, but he's never seen the carnage it makes when it hits. He knows it now," his father tells WBNS-TV.

No. Please don't study the link between video games and random violence in our society.

Which video game shows you how to load a shotgun? Seems to me the bigger problem is that a 4-year-old had access to a shotgun.

no kidding. he probably learned from watching his dad, considering that he knew where the gun and ammo were kept. what kind of gun owner leaves a shotgun where a four-year-old can get at it? I've never heard of such a thing.

I know. His dad must have done it quite often too for a four year old to pick it up.

This was not caused by having a gun in the house. This was caused by NOT having a Bible in the house."

That was one of my fav movies as a kid. Anyway, I hate to say it, but just like a rabid animal doesn't get any better, I don't think this kid will either. In fact we haven't heard the last of him yet. No ''normal'' 4 yro would think to do such a thing.

personally I suspect he had a little encouragement from the 2 teenagers. not like they would ever admit it afterward.

Actually a normal 4 year old might because they don't know any better. A 4 year old probably doesn't have a clear grasp on how deadly firearms are, or even the concept of death. His parents have probably told him "hitting is bad" because little kids hit each other, but most people wouldn't think say "shooting your babysitter with a shotgun is bad".

Anyone here a little confused as to how the kid managed to load and fire the shotgun? It has to have at least an 18 inch barrel, which would make it nearly as big as the kid. I'm surprised he managed to actually hold it well enough to aim. Not to mention the recoil would probably suck, even with such a weak shell.

I'm telling you, those two very innocent 17 year old boys had something to do with it.

Wow, that's really ****ed.

I've played tons and tons and tons of video games. I have no idea how to load bullets into a shotgun, and if I figured it out I would be terrified to shoot it at anything. If I did shoot I'd probably miss whatever I was shooting at and fall on my ass.

My guess is that this 4-year-old watched his Daddy load and shoot a shotgun at the range and have fun doing it. As we all know, as a parent, no matter what you tell a kid they shouldn't do, if they see you do it a lot they're going to want to do it.

This is very sad. The 4 year-old in question needs a good spanking. As to the loading of the weapon; I would like to know how a child this young learned to load a weapon (not that this is a bad thing ... I just want to know how he learned to do it).

I applaud the prosecutor for having the good sense to not charge a 4 year-old with a crime. (The prosecutor was not legally able to do it because young children lack the mens rea requried under the law)

Oh well.

Looks like the parents will be paying medical bills and buying a gun cabinet.

You bring up an excellent point I hadn't even thought of. I am a little over 5 foot and it's a bitch to shoot a shotgun, in fact it's so hard I rarely do it. Thinking more about it, I do find it impossible to believe a four year old could shoot it. Unless the gun was loaded, cocked, and ready to shoot- which would be beyond stupid of the parents- it's really a long shot to say this kid did it.

I am starting to think they had everything to do with it.
