Penn was the guest on a recent episode of the podcast Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, and the two came out against the idea of punishing people for past behavior.

“Empathy is a very important word and also forgiveness,” said O’Brien, who usually refrains from wading into political territory. “This whole concept of cancel culture is… We found that someone did something in 1979 that is now not appropriate. They’re dead to us.”

Penn deemed the practice “ludicrous,” prompting O’Brien to elaborate. “People can also be forgiven. If they even need forgiving. What happened to that?” he said, adding, “It feels very Soviet, kind of, sometimes.”

Penn then addressed the case of Alexi McCammond, the Teen Vogue editor who was fired over anti-Asian tweets she made when she was a teenager.

“When we’re destroying careers like that, what are we really achieving? What are we doing?” the two-time Oscar-winner asked. “Or you look at politicians. I give a big nod to anybody who’s willing to enter the public arena who is doing so because they give a damn.”

It is good to see people on the left calling out this woke/leftist movement out. Cancel culture is idiotic and hypocritical.

Yeah, Conan O' Brien finally goes deep into a conversation about liberal left cancel culture recently during his podcast with Sean Penn, but only AFTER O' Brien had already decided to end his late night TV show. O'Brien never seemed to have the balls or the spine to tackle the subject sooner, being that his fat paycheck would be at risk if he ever spoke out against the prevailing left liberal narratives.

Sorry, but too little too late. O' Brien played it safe and in line for too long to now thinks that he can suddenly become like Adam Carola, Joe Rogan, or even some shock jock types like Stern. O' Brien is a comic/comedy writer, but he has not defended the role the same way Chappel, Seinfeld, Bill Burr, Bill Maher, Carlin and other comics have who have been brave enough to push back against the left cancel culture narratives. O' Brien missed his chance to be relevant.

I hope that those two courageous liberals are not forced to retract their criticism.

In fact, maybe they will be canceled, too.

In the Soviet Union, canceled people became non-persons. Photographs in which they appeared were doctored so that they no longer appeared in the photos.

It would not be beyond the totalitarians in the Democratic Party to demand that history books expunge all reference to the 45th President except for one sentence: "From the end of the glorious eight years of the Honorable Barack Obama and the beginning of the dynamic administration of the Honorable Joseph Biden, the government was held hostage by a very, very, very bad individual. Thanks to patriots, however, we were able eject him through some clever use of mail-in ballots. If you ever see a photograph of that very bad individual in a book, tear out the page and burn it."
