U.S. Pacific Commander Defends 11 Carrier Navy

Only comment at this time, keep a close watch on Admiral Locklear that the Obama administration doesn't go on a witch hunt looking for a reason to purge Admiral Locklear from the Navy for opposing Obama agenda of a 250 ship navy with only 6 or 8 carriers.

>" In a protracted discussion about how many aircraft carriers the United States needs, the top commander in the Pacific said the Navy already can’t meet the demands that Central and Pacific Commands are putting upon it with the 11 carriers now in the fleet.
Wrapping up a House Armed Services Committee hearing Wednesday, Adm. Samuel Locklear said if the number dropped permanently to 10 — a possibility outlined in the defense budget request unveiled by Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel — that limits even further how the nation can respond to a crisis or contingency.

“It takes a while to get there,” Locklear said, referring to the vast maritime space and any response to potential events in the South China Sea, on the Korean Peninsula, or in the Philippines. As an example, he noted “the flash to bang in Korea” could lead to a million casualties in a day. He added that just one aircraft carrier is forward deployed; the others are homeported in East and West Coast naval stations.

“You have to get there quickly . . . to be relevant early,” he said, and again described the Pacific as “the most militarized region in the world” with China rising as a global economic and military power. There also is a buildup of naval forces by allies, partners, and others in the area, as well as disputes over air access, fishing rights, and territorial claims.
The value of the aircraft carrier strike group—in addition to its strike capability and its sovereignty as a U.S. vessel operating in international waters—comes in its deterrent effect. “You use them before you start shooting.”

Reducing the Navy to a fleet of 250 ships would throw into question the United States’ position as a “globally dispersed” world power, capable of operating in air, space, on and under the sea, land and cyber. Later in his answer Locklear said, “Smaller [ship] numbers would make it difficult to maintain the maritime presence I need.”

Specifically, “the role of logistics ships can’t be . . . overstated. I have to move stuff around, like fuel” not only in regular day-to-day operations but also to have a surge capacity to answer an emergency with those vessels as well as amphibious ships.

Locklear described the relationship with the Chinese as “cooperative [but] competitive.” He said that a way out of those disputes over “who would own what,” particularly in the South and East China seas, would bed developing a “code of conduct” through international tribunals or commissions—“not by coercion.” He later said that the Chinese were putting their military-industrial focus on asymmetric counters to U.S. strengths.

In addition to the forward-deployed forces he has in the Pacific, Locklear and other regional combatant commanders rely on rotational forces coming from the services. “The services have had to move readiness from the rest of the global force and push it in our direction [but] they have done it at the significant expense to the follow-on forces,” whose training has been scaled back to meet reduced defense budgets..."<

Point being? Head honchos in the military often times get "purged" when a new "strategy" or "POTUS" takes power....

Can you list them ?

I can't come up with any flag or field grade officers being purged from the military before 2009 except back in 1951.

But this thread isn't about Obama who has already purged 197 flag and field grade officers for political reasons in the past five years.
So don't thread drift and keep it about flat tops. If you want to include amphibious and auxiliary ships feel free to do so. If you want to include that the other services can't provide trained troops because of Obama's cuts in defense spending, feel free to do so.
If want to bring up that the Obama administration has classified navy hospital ships as warships so the navy combat fleet looks larger than it really is, feel free to do so.

I was unaware the POTUS made Defense Department choices and policy.

It all depends who is sitting in the White House at the time. The current CnC makes up the policies as he goes along ignoring the chain of command, military regulations, customs and culture and especially ignores Congress and the Constitution.

Interesting interpretation.....unfortunately completely lacking anything valid to back it up.

Unless, you wish to provide it.......otherwise your ass lips need to be sedated.

Who ordered U.S. Marines to violate their own regulation where male Marines are forbidden to carry umbrellas ?

Who ignored the Constitution and the "War Powers Act" and engaged the American military in an unlawful war in Labia ?

Who ordered that male Marines be femenized and adopt a girly cover (hat) ? It was not the Commandant of the Marine Corps who only answerers to the Secretary of the Navy who only answerers to the Secretary of Defense who only answerers to the CnC aka POTUS.

Who orders an entire fighter squadron out of the air during a week long combat training mission and were ordered to refuel and fly back to their home base to attend PC mandatory sensitivity classes ?

Who ordered the lowering of academic standers for only minority applicants seeking an appointment to our military service academies ? (It's called the dumbing down of the U.S. Officers Corps and the new "Obama Moron Officers Corps.")

Who ordered rifle bolts to be removed from Marines rifles during Obama's second inauguration parade ? BTW: Congress never authorized the Secret Service to be with in the military chain of command.

Who authorized the Air Force to ground 1/3 of all Air Force squadrons ?

Who authorized political booths to be set up on military installations during gay pride celebrations ?

Who authorized two Marine Corps V-22 Ospreys to transport the "First Dog" Bow and a bunch of Obama's basketballs to be airlifted and transported to Martha Vineyards because the Obama family in all of the excitement of going on another vacation forgot they had a dog ?

Who took the oath of office for POTUS and then failed to "preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.” ?
