I went for a consultation and the doctor comes in and says Happy Birthday! Turning 50 is wonderful.

In all seriousness its probably a good thing I had the procedure this morning. One polyp removed. Probably nothing but sure beats later stage colon cancer. I was apprehensive about the prep but it really wasn't that terrible. Sure you are in the bathroom a bit but it wasn't for long periods of time as I read. The worst was getting up at 2:30 to drink 32 ounces of apple juice and miralax. Yuk.

If you are 50 you really should consider it. Don't let the prep stories scare you or the perceived humiliation. An ounce of prevention and all that.

Anyone have an interesting story good or bad? I go back in 5 years. Its nice to have good medical insurance.

I've had two. They weren't so bad. If anyone here is facing one then don't sweat it.

Oi. Just turned 50 myself.

I didn't know that was the accepted date to undergo the procedure.

My first response is 'what a pain in the ass' - well, not literaly, but all that drinking of flush-o-matic crap and sitting on the stool for what seems to be hours on end.

Glad that it turned out OK for you though.

Yeah, they are bugging me, sending reminders, that I need another one. Just don't want to go through it. Too much hassle.

You should go. I had to go to the toilet 5 or 6 times but it was only 5 or 10 minutes at a time. I won't deny its a bit of a hassle but treating advanced cancer is probably more of a hassle. Schedule for a Monday so you can do the prep on a Sunday. Unless that's a busy day for you.

I did one, I am putting off the second for as long as possible....we know pretty for sure that I am not going to have a long life, I am not going to ruin very many days for this test regardless that it cost me nothing in money.

Sorry.

Well buddy, it's time to bend over and say AHHHHHH.

Seriously tough, it isn't that bad. In fact, the procedure is nothing, because you go to sleep and when you wake up, it's over. Your rump may be a little greasy, but that's easily fixed, unless you're into that kind of thing, so...

The prep is the worst part, and as Hari said, even that ain't so bad, because it only lasts one day.

Go get it done. There's nothing to it. If you're clean and clear, then great. If not, trust me, you want to know now. If they find anything they'll deal with it right then, and when you wake up, it's all over. Except maybe for waiting on lab results, but even that has gotten faster.

Go do it. I got 5x7 full color glossy photos of mine. I haven't framed them yet, but I'm still proud of them, nonetheless.

Compared to what women have to go through during medical exams a colonoscopy is a cake walk. ( A fast cake walk to the bathroom mind you, but a cake walk).

Just giving the colon a good old scrubbing isn't a bad idea.

1) have had several-last one was almost two years ago-the Dr noted in 8 years there will probably be something far less invasive. The ads for DNA analysis of a fecal sample have shown those tests getting more and more reliable each year.

2) of course if the DNA test shows an abnormality-you need to get the Roto-rooter procedure

3) there is a new procedure that eliminates the drinking of the laxative solutions that is becoming more and more popular as well-ads for it are popping up. its best described as an elaborate enema machine!

4) A suite mate of mine in college died of colon cancer before he hit thirty. in such a case the cancer was genetic rather than environmental. The colonoscopies at fifty are designed to guard against environmentally induced CC.

5) one of my former colleagues was in a car wreck at age 48 or so. he had back aches that were not evident on MRIs or x-rays. a CAT scan indicated stage IV CC that had spread to his liver. He beat it but it was 16 months of nastiness

6) a guy I coach had months of bowel issues and bleeding-finally got a colonoscopy. They caught the cancer in time and he went through surgery and some mild chemo. he is 53

7) CC is a leading killer yet unlike say pancreatic or brain cancer-easily detectable with a colonoscopy and thus can be treated well before it turns deadly

I felt like my entire life was draining out of me. . . . . Maybe I was drinking too much water before hand or something.

Yeah, I know I should. Late time it was Thursday night for a Friday first appointment.
Yeah, the cancer. Would be one thing if there was a family history, but there isn't. That being said, I wouldn't want to be the first either.
Maybe this fall or winter when it's not the busy summer season?

My wife had the DNA test and she is a bit older than me. No problems. I'm not sure a super enema is better than the laxative prep. To each his own I guess. Would the DNA test detect polyps? Really accurate with the anesthesia. They gave me he stuff Prince overdosed on but I was awake in an hour. Nice dream too, I don't remember it but I remember not wanting to wake up. Celebrated with bagels right off the line (hot and chewy) from Rockland Bakery! You pick them yourself right out of the oven. Very cool or hot in this case.

Instead of a bun in the oven....you had an oven in your buns.;)

Glad you went ahead with it. propofol is a good thing.

The VA gives me an annual FIT test kit. (NPR has a good tutorial on the test.)

Once a year, really simple and my 'virginity' is intact.... ;)

The one thing I actually do miss about NY (other than the people that became my friends), are the fresh hot bagels. God I miss them so much. With kosher butter. Frack, now I'm hungry.

That is for sure. Giving birth prepares your body for near anything in life. All things are cake walks in comparison!

Straight out of the oven, no butter needed. The only place I know where you can do that. You take a bag, some plastic gloves and help yourself. Racks of stuff made that day but the hot bagels rock. We also got a loaf of Irish Soda bread, some pumpernickel rolls and some cannolis at the bakery at check out. They had a couple of different types of challah but I held back. I would have eaten half a loaf being stuck in the house.

LOL! My wife, who had a different treatment, had to use the same stuff you have to ingest before a colo.

She calls it the 'concrete buster' and smiled when she told me, "You won't want to be far from the toilet for many hours'.

What's the name of that roll that I used to get at the Kosher Bakery that looked like a big frigging knot? I would buy one of those on Monday and it would last until the next Monday, and it tasted as good Sunday as it did the previous Monday. They were hard as a rock on the outside but the inside was soft and melted in your mouth.

The prep is the worst part. That swill you have to drink tastes like lemon flavored salt water. It is disgusting.

The colonoscopy itself is nothing really as you are asleep. You do wake up feeling like you spent the night at Micheal Jackson's house but, the prep is much worse.

I have had kidney stones. Needed morphine I think the first time at age 13. Some nice shot to take away the pain. I hear it gives you an idea about child birth. Just on a smaller scale. LOL!

She's telling you the truth. Also, get some diaper rash cream, just in case. You probably won't need it, but if you're a tightwad (like me) and have 80 grit toilet paper, you'll need the Desitin Diaper Rash Cream before its over. Just make sure you get it off of you so the nurses don't laugh at you, and take it from me, they will laugh at you.

Call your doc and get the thing scheduled. Fifty is the magic number. You don't want to screw around with not taking the test. I've had 2 friends who had CC and caught in time and 2 friends who have died with CC, both found out via their much delayed colonoscopy that they had waited too late. It is easily handled if you catch CC in time. Just get it done.
