Just so we're clear, the Secretary of State hardly needs an official email address (and especially doesn't need to cull out all the spam, viruses, and other junk). He or she has plenty of aides to handle correspondence.
That being said, doing government business from a personal email account is a definite no-no.

Holy crap. Either you all are blinded by partisanship or you are so cynical you think everyone else is blinded by partisanship. First, I'm not a Democrat. Second, I am not a Hillary Clinton supporter. I think she would make a horrible President.
But this problem of using personal emails HAS been going on way too long. Secretary Kerry is the first Secretary of State, ever, to predominantly use the government email address. Secretary Hagel, the freaking Secretary of Defense, also used non-government emails.
And, yes, it happened back during the Bush era as well with other high level officials such as Karl Rove. The Chairman of the Oversight and Government Reform Committee at the time said the exchange indicated that in some instances, White House officials were using nongovernmental accounts "specifically to avoid creating a record of communications" that are nonetheless subject to the committee's jurisdiction.
I am not using the "Bush did it too crap" as a counter. I am using it to hit home the point that it is inexcusable that this stuff has been going on WAY too long. Probably even before Bush. Hiding emails from oversight is just one of the problems to this. If the government isn't in control of the servers these emails are sitting on, then the government isn't in control of the SECURITY of the servers either. Even if they are not sending classified emails on these accounts it would still be a prime target for foreign intelligence agencies.
This is serious ****, regardless of the politics of the people doing it. This is a systemic problem that has to be fixed NOW.
I endorse 100%.
Unfortunately there are only rare times that anyone in the Government is held accountable because those who would be taking the steps to punish the infractions are likely doing it themselves.
The corruption in the upper levels of the Federal Government to avoid FOIA is an epidemic. At this point they are all doing it because if they followed the rules they would make easy targets come election time.
The whole apparatus needs to be burned down and start over and there needs to be an independent review and harsh penalties for politicians found in breech of public trust.
Unlikely.
She had ZERO impact when she lent her support and influence to Democrats who lost their jobs in the 2014 midterms.
Maybe, maybe not. We shall have to wait and see. But your take is not what other liberal pundits are even saying...Im sorry. Its still legal even if you dont like the person.
Clinton had no official State Dept. email address - CNN.com
http://www.nytimes.com/2015/03/03/u...il-at-state-department-raises-flags.html?_r=0
Wow. She created a private domain to house her email on the first day of her confirmation hearings in 2009, and never had an official federal email account.
How is it that nobody at the federal level thought to ask why everything that went to Clinton was off the books?
Ok, thanks for clearing that up.Holy crap. Either you all are blinded by partisanship or you are so cynical you think everyone else is blinded by partisanship. First, I'm not a Democrat. Second, I am not a Hillary Clinton supporter. I think she would make a horrible President.

It was kinda a ZERO impact election. Republicans have had ZERO impact since 2014 midterms. (...or before)
In the Fox News article about this it says that past secretaries of state also used had personal email addresses. I also really like that Jeb Bush said "I made my emails from when I was governor public, why can't you do the same?" Then I looked at Jeb Bush's email and found this at the bottom of one of this emails:
"Please note: Florida has a very broad public records law.
Most written communications to or from state officials regarding
state business are public records available to the public and
media upon request. Your e-mail communications may
therefore be subject to public disclosure."
What a louse! I also assume he had at least one personal email account. I mean, if state or federal officials want things kept off the record, they'll make sure it's off the record. And at the same time, the powers that be aren't going to allow the Secretary of State to operate independently and without oversight. I don't understand why this story is any more angering than what happens every day in Washington.
To the bolded. What's all the fuss over then??
Given things like the Chelsea Manning hack, her emails may have been safer on her private account...
I do agree they should all be given to the govt for storage and retrieval under FOIA requests. I'm not bent out of shape because she used a private email account as prior SOS's have done.
You're not bent out of shape because she's Hillary Clinton, the Democrat. I mean lets be honest.
And which previous Secretary of state went to this extent to remain under the radar ?
Which previous Sec of State exclusively ised a private email account to make sure their communications couldn't be accessed by FOIA request ?
One of the reason why this is a isssue is because there's a Committee thats in the middle of a investigation that needs access to her Email, and not just the one's she's willing to allow them to see.
Yes, no fuss at all over Obama's Secretary of state violating the Federal Records act and going out of her way to make sure her Emails couldn't be secured by any future Congressional Committee investigations.
The most " transparent " administration in History, huh ?
Progressives lies are catching up to this administration.
if this was GWB, Cheney or C Rice.. they would be deranged with anger...
Manufactured scandals like " Bush lied us into war " enrages them. They wanted him tried for " War crimes ".
This ? Benghazi , the IRS and Fast and Furious ? Nothing to be concerned about.
Having worked on administration teams for Federal email servers for a decade, this statement is false.
First, unless you are using your official email to sign up for OKCUPID or open an Amazon account your aren't going to be inundated by Spam.
Second, it is a legal requirement that all official communication be saved in perpetuity which a private email account is created to circumvent.
Third, private email servers are far more vulnerable to hacks and exposure than are federal email systems.
How very kind of you to call it a no-no. The Sec State is a govt employee (elected), not a ****ing goddess. She gets a govt email account like everyone else. That being said, she ran her own ****ing private server. The question is, WHY?
AP News : Clinton ran own computer system for her official emails
Well, according to all the breaking news, that's exactly what she did.
None of which disproves my statement that the Secretary of State has no pressing need for an official email address.
As of today, none of the breaking news is releasing the contents of any of these emails.
Yes, the Secretary of State has an ESSENTIAL pressing need for a secure email account of a Federal email server. Your claim that she doesn't just proves how little you understand about safeguarding top secret and secret data chain of custody.
When you transmit state secrets on a public mail server it can no longer be classified as state secrets. You have to immediately tag the data as leaked.
Now it's your turn to make a (well, another) wrong assumption. The Secretary of State has other - and possibly even more secure - ways of handling state secrets than a secure email account. Obviously it's not acceptable to use a public server, but it's hardly the only other alternative.
