ESPN - Class action suit asks for more than $100 million from Patriots, Belichick - NFL

NEW ORLEANS -- A class action lawsuit filed in federal court here Friday claims that the New England Patriots "fraudulent videotaping" of the St. Louis Rams' walk-through prior to Super Bowl XXXVI 2002 Super Bowl should cost the team damages in excess of $100 million.

The suit targets the Patriots and head coach Bill Belichick. The suit says: "The basis of this action is that the Defendants illegally videotaped the St. Louis Rams ("Rams") "walk through" prior to the 2002 Super Bowl for the purpose of gaining an unfair advantage in the game." It claims the Patriots were engaged in fraud, racketeering, breach of contract, and were

Good old New Orleans. Can't say I'm surprised to read articles like these, some things never change.

With Loser Pays this kind of case would rarely be filed. My bet is that you favor Loser Pays in other situations. Isn't it kind of hypocritical to be in favor of it when the case is to your liking or am I wrong about your stance on Loser Pays?

I am curious as to how fans are going to show they were harmed even if they can prove it happened.

Nothing like a bit of the 'Ol frivolous Lawsuit, to get the juices flowing.

Hey...NP, I thought you took issue with these things.

The Pats have already had to pay a $500,000 fine and forfeit a first round draft pick for cheating against the Jets........People pay big dollars to go to these games and they should be above board........If they are not then a very heavy price should be paid............

If you were a pro football fan you would understand this........

This is a class action suit questioning the credibility of and NFL team.....Hardly a frivolous law suit..........

Yup, you are right. Now all you are going to need is an activist judge to go along with you. :rofl

I don't really give a crap about who won a football game, but I think using the courts in this matter is a big problem. Idiots like this would think twice about filing this kind of suit unless they were reasonably certain of their case if they had to pay the costs of those they sued if they lost.

So how much more is a Super Bowl win worth than a loss worth to a fan?

A lot trust me........I know you might think its trivial but some f us live and die with our teams..........

Trust you on this? I don't think so. You are the one claiming winning has a high monetary value to a fan. Surely you can back it up with some kind of facts.

I do not think you can use the fact that you live and die with your teams in court. I think they would require something more concrete.

Live and die with your teams? Really? Yet you're still alive?

Who the hell cares? Another stupid frivolous law suit. So is this it now? Your team lost a superbowl you want justice served so you turn to the courts?
It's indifferent to the steroid use with Clemens at the Capital these days, it's a complete waste of tax payer money that could've been put to FAR FAR FAAAAAAAAR more relevant issues than a ball game.
Get your collective heads out of your collective arses it's JUST A FRACKING GAME!

My teams has won 5 out of 6 super bowls...........No NFL team has done better........

I did not mention monetary value................

When the team I follow wins I don't make a dime........

So what? Have they resolved our national debt problem? How about your single issue staying in the war in Iraq? Healthcare resolved? No, nothing, because it's pointless as is this frivolous lawsuit.

That's kind of what I thought but you have been championing this law suit. So how are those that filed this law suit going to show damages?

What the hell is this all about? Are you having trouble focusing again?

No I just think the Patriots should be held responsible for what they have done.......

Shouldn't that be up to the league instead of the court system? What happens if everyone starts filing law suits when their favorite team does not win?

THey were fined by the NFL for breaking an NFL rule. However, to win in court, you have to prove they did something AGAINST THE LAW. Something tells me that there is nothing in the New Orleans code that says anything about videotaping opposing team's signals. That falls exclusively within the purvue of the NFL, and it has already acted.

This lawsuit is COMPLETELY without merit.

Oh, and BTW - GO PATS!!!

If they break the law so be it...........You can't have all but one team playing by the rules.........

They already have been by the only authority with the jurisdiction to do so - the NFL!

Just the violations against the Jets...........This is a whole new ball game.........

Actually, I believe the commish knew about the other alleged violations and that was taken into account.

Again, there is no LAW about this - this is a matter of NFL rules and the NFL is the only competent authority to address this.
