The U.S. Central Intelligence Agency warned in a report that the tough austerity measures and the dire situation could escalate and even lead to a military coup, according to a report by Germany’s popular daily Bild.

Doubt it. Even if the Greek government lost control of the protestors and there where to be a complete nationwide mutiny, i just cannot see the Greek military removing those from power and taking over. It is possible that the military would pressure the ruling party to give up its seat or the constitutional court would unseat them instead, but to throw a coup and remove a mandated government by force would have such dire consequences on Greece it gives me goose bumps thinking about it.

The EU and the Eurozone will play a very important role in lifting Greece out of debt in the next decade, a coup would invalidate Greek membership and condemn the Greek economy to severe economic depression, even worse than now, for many generations to come.

I hope the government keeps pushing this thing through and do what needs to be done. Another political party CANNOT wish away the countries ills. The debt is their regardless of who is in power.

Well, the new sick man of Europe eh?

Lol uhm what does that have to do with Greece? It's wise the CIA discusses hypothetical scenarios, because when the unexpected happens they know how to react. Hell i bet deep down in their archives they had a handbook gathering dust on a shelf somewhere entitled "What to do during Arab Spring PART I".

Just don't like to see people with the freedom to follow their own path? I mean, heaven forbid the people kick out a government they don't like.

Shiiiiiiitttt i read the report wrong.
My apology.
But i still hate our foreign policy.

The biggest thing to keep an eye on is the fact that its not only Greece but a lot of other European countries that have robbed Peter to pay Paul on their austerity measures. Now that the bills are coming due the people do not want to be stuck with the tab yet still want their wants taken care of by governments that can no longer charge it off onto future generations. America is in the same boat, but luckily our economy is stronger than most of the EU nations for now, if Obama gets another term that also may not be the case anymore here.

As stated, a Greek military coup would lead to severe economic hardship and an even stronger backlash than what the government is receiving now.

The US government, and I presume most other governments, have contingencies for all kinds of events that are unlikely. The military even developed a plan to invade Canada in the 1920's

A good government should plan for all contingencies no matter how likely or popular the plans will be received. No one wants their government to be dysfunctional in times of crises or emergency.

makes me wonder: the US military swears loyalty not to the President, or the Government, but the Constitution.

What does the Greek military swear loyalty to?
