I thought unions were all about workplace safety...
I suggest going to a strip club during lunch then, see how many people pop in for an hour or two then go back to work. They are very unlikely to be blue collars workers doing that
Isn't the union appealing these druggin and drinkin machine shop workers?
The union is representing the workers, which is their obligation. In cases like this, think of the union as kinda like lawyers.
No. The union should be protecting the workers over all. They are putting all the line workers at risk by defending these actions. These guys are putting the livelyhood of everyone they work around at risk.
Appeal was agreed to in the contract. The fired workers have requested that the Union (which they pay dues to and is supposed to represent them should the appeal be necessary) and enact the appeal. There's nothing wrong. The company can still say that they're fired as there is plenty of proof of them having violated worker safety and conduct. Or they can pity them and give them a second chance. But none of this is to actually gain the ability to drink beer while on the job.
Demonstrating once again the fruitless uselessness of Unions! :2razz:
if these people are hired back then I think maybe it will show the usefullness of it. Hell, even having the ability to appeal in the first place is a bit of a step up from no union.
Only if the appeal leads to kegerators on the line!
The summer before my Senior year in School I worked 3rd shift at a plant that build napalmm and a bout half the shipping crew were either drunk or stoned every day.
It got so bad thay had to stop filling the bombs at the plant.
This UAW problem needs to have the Feds step in and demand everyone caught be fired and very UAW official also fired, and anyone who can be charged with a crime arrested.
How many lives do these people put at risk doing this?
Can we then infer from your post, Badmutha, that non-union workers, Wall Street honchos and bailed out capitalists don't drink and dope on the job?
I think what people here need to realize on both sides is demonizing the UAW and suggesting such things are accepted by the UAW is silly.

I can't tell you how many people I've known in construction that drink on the job, making $350,000 houses, people in offices that drink (which usually if its in a office it is actually allowed), all the way down to of course your basic service job. It isn't so much of a union problem as it is, some people just like to be drunk or high regardless of politics, religon, race, sex, or how down low or high up they are.

So you want gov interference at a private companies problem? This UAW problem needs to have the Feds step in and demand everyone caught be fired and very UAW official also fired, and anyone who can be charged with a crime arrested.
Honestly probably not as much as you think. How many lives do these people put at risk doing this?
