Going with the "El Santo" line of beachwear. Interesting.

How does a full body swimsuit and hood protect against heat?

The sun, yes. But heat? I mean, perhaps if they were pure white. But..
It is mostly to protect against sun, but I imagine there is a similar effect going on for why traditional garb in the middle east is layers of loose clothing.
The results were clear. As the report puts it: "The amount of heat gained by a Bedouin exposed to the hot desert is the same whether he wears a black or a white robe. The additional heat absorbed by the black robe was lost before it reached the skin."

Bedouins' robes, the scientists noted, are worn loose. Inside, the cooling happens by convection – either through a bellows action, as the robes flow in the wind, or by a chimney sort of effect, as air rises between robe and skin. Thus it was conclusively demonstrated that, at least for Bedouin robes, black is as cool as any other colour.

Yeah...I misread the title to suggest that they're wearing them because of the heat, when the title really just says that people are wearing them and that it happens to be really hot now.

At any rate, I would expect you'd want a hood like that to be pure white. Gotta get pretty damn hot with one of those things on even if the sun isn't getting to your skin.

LOL - they're not exactly concerned about fashion sense, but I guess if it has practical application - damn the fashionistas. :)

My first thought about their purpose was something they could douse in water to keep cool - which frankly, would seem to be a decent idea - and might actually catch on here if they could make them a little less.... disturbing? :)
