Beijing (AFP) - Beijing's defence ministry on Thursday warned the US navy to "be careful" in the South China Sea and slammed a newly signed agreement between Washington and the Philippines.
[h=1]China to US: 'Be careful' in South China Sea[/h]
Could be a brand new cold war, this time with China. They'd better be careful too: We won the last one, the one with the Soviet Union.
It is the South China Sea, not the South American Sea. We had better be careful poking around in their traditional sphere of influence.
I predict that by the end of this century China will have achieved world hegemony. I think it would be unwise to fight a war in an effort to stop them.
A shooting war with China would be unthinkable, just as one with the old Soviet Union would have been. A propaganda war, a cold war, that could actually happen. Could we win another cold war at this point I wonder?
We know there would be a cold war if the president was GOP. How would Hillary react to tensions with China? Different than BO?

We won the last one. The one now building is of a structure that game theory says is not possible to win in the long run. As Keynes said, in the long run we are all dead.
The last one was won economically. China's economy is far better than that of the old Soviet Union ever was.

We could smoke China.. Not scared..
Maybe. We smoked the Soviets.
But, the Soviets depended on a socialist economic system. China has dumped theirs, despite the fact that they still call themselves "Communists," in favor of a regulated capitalism.
China is pretty much fully state controlled economically, on the mainland at least I'm not speaking of Hong Kong, Macau etc.. so its still a state planned economy. can put it in the communist category or the socialist category or whatever.
I see a lot of similarities though... in China trying to exert their influence they are spending a hell of a lot of money. This is how the soviet union fell apart.
However, we have significant economic ties to China. and besides occupying Tibet, wanting and trying to gain control of Taiwan, trying to get 'full' control over Hongkong and Macau... well besides that they aren't like the soviet union members of occupied states.
So little will break up. I think though that we wont have to wait as long for their economy to tank far enough that publish pressure will push a change in their policy no matter how desperately the party tries to hold on.
From what I've learned China wants to control the entire Asian market, including India, and by force and intimidation keep European and US countries out. They want to divide the worlds markets into "Mine and ours".
We must enforce freedom of the seas, regardless of what China thinks, or they will soon be clearing outer space of satellites that fly over their "interests".

A shooting war at sea is easily winnable for the US.
In the 19th century the British wrold empire had a policy of it's navy being stronger than the next 2 combined. Today the USA has a navy stronger than all the rest combined.
Right, and of course we'd have to agree that the war could only be fought on the sea.
Right??
Well, unless the USA invades China or the Chinese go through North Korea to attack the most fortified border in the world or the Chinese have air superiority suficent to air assault Taiwan it has few other venues.
If the USA invades China... well, we did invade Iraq, so I suppose that's a possibility. Sometimes the CIC does very foolish things. What if it happens the other way around?
