China to US: 'Be careful' in South China Sea

It is the South China Sea, not the South American Sea. We had better be careful poking around in their traditional sphere of influence.

I predict that by the end of this century China will have achieved world hegemony. I think it would be unwise to fight a war in an effort to stop them.

So by that definition everybody should GTFO of the Gulf of Mexico because it has "Mexico" in its name, right?

The PRC has always been rather imperialist, but I doubt they will ever truly achieve world hegemony. They'll try, of course, and the usual "do you want to die for Danzig"-ers will pipe up, but in the end I think the US will remain.

a war (hot or cold) with China is mutually assured going broke. we're too economically dependent on each other at this point.

This. China is all talk and plenty of bluster. Their navy isnt battle tested either and will fold like a paper tiger if they go up against the US and Japanese navies- they know this too.

What happens in the South China Sea is none of America's business.

Let the locals work it out.

If they start shooting, that's their problem UNLESS one country invades another - then maybe America should possible get involved.

America is going broke being the world's cops. Let the rest of the world fix it's minor problems...and this is (as of now) DEFINITELY minor (as much as neocons want us to think otherwise).

A shooting war with China would be unthinkable, just as one with the old Soviet Union would have been. A propaganda war, a cold war, that could actually happen. Could we win another cold war at this point I wonder?

Why bother? Sounds like more effort than it's worth.

Wow, what a great point! We can further conclude that the Sea of Japan belongs to Japan, the English Channel to England, and the Atlantic Ocean to Atlantis! Thanks for pointing this out.

Yeah, just because loads ofthe world's trade goes through tese waters and that if China can take the ownership of this big ocean by force the rule of international law will be over with the result that we can expect lots more battles over the whole world's oceans dose not mean that the nation which benefits most from the laws it set up should do anything with it's not at all busy vast navy to police the world does it?

That is just what I maintain.

I heard these same words 10 years ago, and actually started believing them. Now that I live and work here, I can see that is not going to happen so long as the United States and the nations surrounding China stand against their invasive creep, which they think is so cute. The CCP can no longer control the country with its typical socialist hails and rants, so more and more tv shows and news articles within the country spew nationalist rhetoric more akin to the type propagated by the Nazis of Germany and the Imperialist Japanese of World War II. Watching and listening to them so closely now, I am witnessing a most bazaar phenomenon of how willingly people will believe things that are not true, such as the whole of the South China Sea always belonging to them, though they state that China was not a country before 1949. Odd, huh? The reality is that the so-called top of the line vessels and pristeen ships that are decked out for propaganda videos lay unmanned and only maintain for what I can only call satelite"shows" in harbors such as Xiamen. The true navy is more like McHale's, with laundry hanging off the side of rusty barnacle laden PT boats. Sailors in copy cat uniforms of the US Navy's blue camo, only much more ragged, urinate and defecate from the sides of the boats in places like Taizhou, a main base for such craft harassing foreign fishing boats. Business wise, all you hear from foreigners here is how hard it is to do business. From the Chinese, how hard it is to keep business up, and they just do not get it. You put in an order for this...and you get something completely different with a smile, and a comment like, "You will like this better." No, I see all that they have gained over the last couple of decades being lost by corruption, greed, and a mass delusion complicated by the mental effects of pollutants such as Benzine in the air from Harbin in the north to Shenzhen in the south. They are slowly imploding, and I no longer believe that they will overtake us. In fact, we could turn out the lights of most of the country overnight with only a score or more Tomahawks, so ridiculous have they been in the location and centralization of power resources along their coast. Their navy would be sunk in hours. And that would be the end of that. Have a great day. Can I hear for G20?
