China slaps retaliatory tariffs of 84% on U.S. goods in response to Trump

If there weren't real economic effects, it would be comical to watch. The Dunning Kruger effect always has some nice schadenfreude to it.

I don’t think the MAGA base has given much thought to the ramifications these trade wars are going to have in their local communities.

It can quickly become a chain reaction.

FYI - The EU also just voted its first rounded of retaliatory tariffs.

Here:

The European Commission, the bloc’s executive arm, said duties would start being collected from April 15. According to a draft document seen by CNBC in March, the tariffs target a wide range of goods, including poultry, grains, clothing and metals

I deplore Walmart and have been screaming about Walmart from the rooftops for years.

But, Walmart has decimated local economies and become the “only game in town” in many of them.

Walmart falls and a lot of those red areas will be economically crushed. They don’t have anything else to fall back on.

Walmart is one of the single largest employers in the US. And, those jobs are located in some of our most economically depressed areas.

Just like with farmers, I doubt Trump would let WalMart fail. He might prop them up with our tax dollars.

One example of the impact farmers are feeling...

My HVAC guy just did the same with me, on a recent bid. He called to say he can't honor his bid, and won't know his price until his wholesaler actually delivers.

IOW, he's asking me to buy before I fully know the bid price.

This is no way to do business.

Good for them.

Never thought I’d find myself cheering for China…but here we are.

Trump has the US acting like a school yard bully.
And bullies ultimately reveal themselves to be cowards.

Not very bright ones, at that.

Actually, after China's rebuff it seems the EU voted to levy their first round (25%) of retaliatory tariffs against Trump.
But the nations of the EU are desperate to engage in talks in a way that China isn't. China has already publicly declared that they're willing to wage a tit-for-tat tariff war, as deep and as long as is needed. Unlike anything Trump says, I believe them.
I may start a separate thread on this.
(y)
I would argue - effectively neither of the two leaders must atone to the People.
Yeah .... but Trump has yet to be named "President for Life" like Jinping has.
"The Donald" is already 7 years older and, given his lifestyle and dietary choices, unlikely to outlast Xi.

I wonder too about large contracts. I'm about to order several hundred thousand tons of steel for my new high rise/bridge/ship etc.

It's about to cost me 25% more.

WalMart virtually eliminated alternative sourcing in small towns across America.

Now, those townies have no alternative to whatever WalMart does. It may as well be "the company store" of old.

Ironically, many of the affected will be in the heart of Trump Country.

China sells all of its cars to the entire world... minus the US. They have the rest of Earth as willing trading partners. They'll weather the economic storm far better than the US if it comes to that. Let's not forget that China locked everyone in their homes for months with little real backlash.
Like you said...not to the US.

So, we aren't talking about that $500 billion being about cars.

It will shut down the Chinese economy...or Xi will be ousted.

This is what it's all about with respect to China...

How do you come to the bolded conclusion, when the U.S. only receives 14% of China's exports?

This is what von der Leyen had to say about it.

President von der Leyen held today a phone call with Premier Li Qiang to discuss the state of EU-China relations, as 2025 marks the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties.

The two leaders held a constructive discussion during which they took stock of bilateral and global issues.

The President underscored the vital importance of stability and predictability for the global economy. In response to the widespread disruption caused by the US tariffs, President von der Leyen stressed the responsibility of Europe and China, as two of world’s largest markets, to support a strong reformed trading system, free, fair and founded on a level playing field.

The President called for a negotiated resolution to the current situation, emphasising the need to avoid further escalation.

President von der Leyen emphasised China’s critical role in addressing possible trade diversion caused by tariffs, especially in sectors already affected by global overcapacity. The leaders discussed setting up a mechanism for tracking possible trade diversion and ensuring any developments are duly addressed. (more)

She's more concerned about what she's going to do with all the excess production if the US consumers don't buy the stuff. She's not talking about buying all the Chinese stuff that the US consumers won't buy. Neither the EU nor China want to buy each other's stuff. They both just want to sell their stuff. They BOTH have a big problem.

Really, the best thing either can do is just make a deal with Trump. They they'll both retain their access to the US market.

China has called Donald Trump's tariff "raise", matching yesterday's additional 50% tariff imposed upon Chinese goods, now placing the ball back in Mr. Trump's court.

By now, I think few of us are surprised. It appears both countries - for now - seem to be vying with ending trade relations.

I suspect the American taxpayers, besides paying the additional tariff taxes, will need to bail-out the farmers again - as we did during Donald Trump's first term.

Woe is us.
This could lead to major disengagement between the US and China.

Oh no!

Why not China? The left is already cheering for gang members, murderers, Hamas terrorists and the assassination of the president so why not give China a little of that love?

Citizens and leaders all across the world are now cheering for China. That Trump makes a ruthless dictatorship into the "good guy".

"The president made the bold remark during a 90-minute address as he attempted to court political donors at the National Republican Congressional Committe’s annual fundraising dinner in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday evening.
“These countries are calling us up, kissing my a**” to negotiate deals on tariffs, Trump said
just hours before his reciprocal duties went into effect against dozens of nations just after midnight on Wednesday, including a 104 percent levy on Chinese imports.

“They are,” he emphasized. “They are dying to make a deal.”

The president went on to mock the tariff-deal supplicants, pretending to be them as he pitifully pleaded in a simpering voice: “Please, Sir, make a deal. I’ll do anything. I’ll do anything, Sir.”"

FYI - Just hours later, the EU (this morn) levied their first round of retaliatory tariffs.

China's also doing a very poor job of ass kissing.

Trump thinks he's an irresistible force...

...welp, here's an immovable object to prove it on. A trade partner Trump can't minimize or dominate.
Let's get this over with, so we can start picking up the pieces.

With the EU retaliating this morning with their "first wave", and Trump announcing he is going to add tariffs on pharmaceuticals, yeah - the bolded seems about right.

The outcome of the tariff war between the United States of America and China depends upon which leader is more secure in his position, among other things. There are indications that some identifying themselves as MAGA members are having second thoughts.

Regards, stay safe 'n well . . . informed.

Those countries are also saying that no one is answering the phone.

Even if the administration wants to negotiate, they don't have the capacity to negotiate with 186 nations and territories all at once.

Have I mentioned lately that these people have no plan or endgame....?

I've been patiently waiting for the Administration to release the metrics defining success.

I may as well be waiting for Trumpcare . . .

Yeah, about that.

Trump is deliberately driving the global economy into a ditch. Meanwhile, Republicans are demanding big cuts to federal spending. If the Federal Reserve cuts interest rates, that will exacerbate the inflation caused by the tariffs.

Meaning this time, the US government is unlikely to provide much, if any, relief from the next recession -- which will make it much, much worse than recent recessions. The world will be lucky if it's a repeat of the 2008 recession.

Yesterday Larry Fink, CEO of Blackwater Financial, told a group of fellow IB type guys that the market has about 20% more down to go, and there will be a period of M & A like the country has never seen before.

He said this jubilantly, to a receptive audience.

Why not China? The left is already cheering for gang members, murderers, Hamas terrorists and the assassination of the president so why not give China a little of that love?

the left is doing that? going to need some proof of them "cheering" for that, but i doubt i'll get that from you

Just wait.

Mr Trump will soon be announcing that the US tariff rate on Chinese goods is being increased to 208%, that the government of China is a terrorist organization, that the Chinese are invading America, and that everyone of even 1/8th "Chinese blood" is to be rounded up and deported.
