China signals opening for trade talks with US

Who who owns our debt? How did they get the dollars to buy them? It's not that hard to figure all this out.
Where you buying shoes from?

Seriously.

What shoes do you have on your feet today?

What device are you typing on?

Your money went to China. 🤷‍♀️

How much are you willing to pay for your next pair of shoes? Your next device?

Do you really want to keep having a $300 billion trade deficit with China? That's $300 billion of our money supporting their military, buying their weapons to use against Taiwan - or us!

I think Trump is unto something.

I brought this up several times over the past week. It doesn't seem to concern the progressives.
They don't understand that, by doing something, we can have lower prices and stop supporting China's ambitions. So they opt for doing nothing.

It was samething during Trump's first term. When he brought up China's unfair trade practices there was an uproar. Then everyone settled down and agreed

Well, we aren’t living in your parents world. We are living in 2025.

Jesus, I don’t think I’ve read a post that dumb in a while - and there’s a lot of dumb shit posted here.

Really you consider that dumb? How do you feel about financing a country that's going to stroll into Taiwan and take a few of our ships out along the way? Including the possibility of a couple other Asian country allies.

I mean you're worried about shoes. And they won't be made here in the US if we don't get any from china. There's already other countries picking up the sources. Are you really concerned with shoes and their cost over the cyber attacks that China is launching on this country on a daily basis?

Again speaking of dumb. Or maybe doing something intelligent we could solve two birds with one stone. We should be doing everything we could to encourage imports that we're using from China to be constructed in South American countries.

How you going to have lower prices?

Let’s hear you reason it out and explain it.

Prices are going to skyrocket because of Trump tariffs. Not go lower.

We have tariffs against the entire god damned WORLD. )except what, Russia?)

Ranging from 10% to 145%. (Actually higher than that…I think all in, it’s something like 161% with China in certain sectors)

There is nothing at all smart, strategic, etc about deciding to start tariff wars with the entire WORLD.

Nothing.

No matter how the MAGA koolaid crowd tries to rationalize it.

Chinese state media has said there would be “no harm” in holding trade talks with the Trump administration, indicating a softening of Beijing’s position as both sides look for a way out of their crushing tariff war.
The gesture comes as Trump has indicated he hopes to negotiate over trade and as the fallout has begun to show in China’s economic data, with factory activity in April dropping the most since 2023 as export orders dried up.

Yuyuan Tantian, an account affiliated with state broadcaster CCTV, said in a social media post on China’s Weibo platform on Thursday that Beijing did not need to talk to the US before Washington took substantive action.“But if the US wishes to engage with China, there’s no harm in it for China at this stage,” it said.

Analysts said the language represented a softening of Beijing’s position from last week when the commerce ministry indicated the US would need to drop its steep levies on China before negotiations could begin.

Andrew Polk, co-founder of Trivium China, an advisory group, said the post seemed “to be laying the groundwork to come to the table”.“By painting the US as the more eager, more anxious, more pressured party they are trying to portray themselves as coming from a place of strength,” he said. “This should play well with the domestic audience and give them cover to start negotiations.”

I hope China holds tight and brings us to our knees.

I disagree with tariffs on the whole goddamn world. But in this one thread we're discussing China which we should be focused on. And you're concerned with your shoes. So here's some options
Vietnam:
Vietnam is a major exporter of footwear, with a strong presence in the industry, according to RunRepeat.
Indonesia:
Indonesia is another major player in footwear manufacturing, particularly in the production of athletic shoes, according to Doing Footwear.
Italy:
Italy is renowned for its high-end luxury footwear and skilled craftsmanship, particularly in the leather industry.
United Kingdom:
The UK is known for its classic and timeless shoe styles, like the Oxford and brogue, says The Elegant Oxford.
India:
India is a significant footwear producer and is becoming a more attractive manufacturing location.
Other countries:
Numerous other countries, including Thailand, Pakistan, and Brazil, also contribute to global footwear production, according to WorldAtlas.

People do into debt buying consumer products. They buy so much they go bankrupt. Government end up bailing them out one way or another. People need to just quit buying all this crap. People put the GDP metric on a pedestal but just having a higher GDP isn't necessarily better.

Great post. Spoken from the heart of a true progressive.

No, a true patriot Republican American.

America needs to suffer so the potato heads finally understand what is becoming of our country and leave the cult.

On the backs of forced labor funding a military, that we may face some day. A country launching cyber attacks on a daily basis.
🤷‍♂️

Guess what?

Those conversations don’t come at the end of a blunt club and threats.

And those business moves get done strategically through friendly and cooperative conversations. And take time and planning.

Not by a buffoon like we have in the current Oval starting a fight with the entire world at once with no planning or notice given - even to US industry. Or any global industry.

Coulda, woulda, shoulda…that’s not what happened.

70% of US shoes come from China. That’s reality.

You don’t just magically spin up manufacturing in the US - or anywhere else globally - that offsets that.

That’s not how manufacturing ANYWHERE works. No company, anywhere, is sitting on that sort of excess inventory to meet that demand nor capable of spinning it up and getting it on store shelves.

It's not a tariff war. It's the reordering of world trade. Tariffs are just the ante.
It is a horribly misguided tariff war.

We owned the world post WW2

We have lived like kings as a result.

Trump is ending this forever.

Yep I'm sorry if this continues and you're going to be inconvenienced even further and probably pay some more for shoes.
I find it kind of sad that Americans want our guys on aircraft carriers fending off missiles in the South Pacific so we can have cheaper shoes..

Well Bird in hand is already suffering with the thought that the price of her shoes may go up and availability may go down.

I doubt the Dems care about much of anything except TDS.. The trade deficit is just part of Chinese malign trade.
They take our manufacturing jobs, produce cheap goods, and sell it back to the USA. we lose jobs, manufacturing ability and the trade deficit enable China to fun their SOEs. That means we cant sell there because of unfair subsidizing, and closed markets
